George H. Baker, age 78 a longtime resident of Copperas Cove passed away Sunday, November 1, 2009 at his residence. George was born November 20, 1930 in Thayer, West Virginia to Joseph Robert Baker and Gertrude (Morris) Baker. He served in the United States Army from 1949 to 1969. While serving he fought in the Korean War and received the Good Conduct Medal Bronze Clasp with four loops. After retirement he was a home builder in the local area. He was a very skilled wood worker and inventor that enjoyed fishing, hunting and the outdoors. Mr. Baker was preceded in death by first wife Trudy Baker in 1974. He is survived by his wife, Aleda Baker of Copperas Cove; three sons, Gerald Menzel of Dallas, James Baker of Kempner and Robert Baker and his wife Carmen of Copperas Cove; a daughter, Marion Hawks of Topeka, Kansas; three stepsons, Donald Carter, James Carter and David Carter; a step daughter, Ellen Rackley and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Thursday, November 5, 2009 in the chapel of Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home in Copperas Cove. Interments services will follow in the Copperas Cove City Cemetery with full military honors. For those that desire the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society or to Scott and White Hospice. Services have been entrusted to the care of Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home in Copperas Cove.
