John was born on Aug 22, 1956, in San Gabriel, CA to Calogera and Nicolo Alfieri. He was raised in Los Angeles County. He attended Bell High School and graduated with Honors in 1974. He enlisted in the Navy with his brothers Joe and Nick in 1974, and was honorably discharged as a second-class quartermaster in 1978. While in the service he obtained his 100 ton masters license. After the service he and his brothers (Joe, Nick, and Tony) moved to San Diego and worked on board long range sportfishing boats for two years before pursuing a career in commercial fishing. In 1980, they purchased their first commercial fishing vessel and named that boat after their mother “CALOGERA”. In 1992, he and brothers (Nick and Tony) built a larger vessel in Chula Vista, CA and named it “CALOGERA A”. He loved all aspects of the fishing life whether he was out on the ocean catching fish or in port working on his boat or fishing gear. He was competitive, he was driven, and always strived to be the best at whatever he did. He is survived by 5 brothers and 2 sisters: Sam, Mary, Joe, Nick, Tony, Susy, and Carmelo.John passed away on Wednesday, January 6, 2010 in San Diego at the age of 53.Services will be held at Fort Rosecrans Cemetery on Thursday, January 21st at 9am in Point Loma, CA.
