He will be greatly missed by his loving wife Lina, daughters Erika Bamford (Earl), Karen Baker (Scott), and Rita Merriman (Karl); his grandchildren Danielle, Adam (Cassi), Greg (Maddy), and Alyssa; and the newest lights of his life, his great grandchildren Maverick and Lane. Sieg is survived by his two younger siblings, Dora Schaloske (Ernst) and Erich Schulz (Ruth), and a large extended family.
Sieg was born on May 15, 1938 in Poland. Due to their German heritage he and his family were forced to flee to Germany during the war, before immigrating to Canada in 1953. After spending two years working in the sugar beet fields in Alberta the family moved to Abbotsford, BC in 1955.
After assisting his mom on the farm for 5 years, while his father was working in Vancouver, Sieg went to work in the construction industry helping to build high-rises in Vancouver as well as the United Church in North Vancouver.
Sieg and Lina befriended one another at church youth group and in 1962 they married.
Sieg and Lina successfully farmed raspberries for 36 years while raising their family of three girls. Sieg has always been guided by his faith which enabled him to overcome life’s challenges and see the best in everything. He enjoyed his church community, travelling, maintaining an immaculate yard, needlepoint, woodworking, singing, and socializing with friends and family.
As his daughters got married he was happy to welcome the sons he never had. Over the years the family expanded and his grandchildren became the light of his life. Every summer Oma and Opa took Danielle, Adam, Greg and Alyssa camping. This allowed all of them to develop a special bond with each other that will never be forgotten and will always be cherished. Even now as he was struggling with his health his two great grandchildren, Maverick and Lane, were the spark that lit him up and gave him immense joy every time he saw them.
Sieg lived an incredible life. Even though he faced many health challenges he maintained a positive attitude, had a cheerful disposition, never complained and was a blessing to everyone who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to donate in Sieg’s memory may do so to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of British Columbia.
The memorial service will be held on Tuesday, November 14, 2023 at 11am at Peace Lutheran Church, 2029 Ware St, Abbotsford, BC.
