OBITUARY
Terras (Terry) Gordon McHardy
April 9, 1944 – November 29, 2017
It is with great sadness that we announce Terry’s passing at 73 years of age. He was pre-deceased by his mother, Alice May McHardy, and his father, John Terras McHardy. He is survived by his loving wife, Callie; brother, Bob (Margaret); daughter, Heather (Michael); son, Alex and grandchildren Maddison and Morgan. As a young man, Terry was a member of the Seaforth Highlanders Pipe Band. An extremely accomplished piper, while the band was on tour in the U.K., Terry was chosen to play a solo for H.R.H. Queen Elizabeth.
He originally joined his father in running the Scottish Shop in Vancouver, then took over the shop for several years after his father retired. He then changed course and, like his father before him, joined the Vancouver Police Department, where he served as a police officer for 26 years before retiring in 2000.
Terry lived in the Lower Mainland for most of his life, then he and Callie moved to the Okanagan for a number of years after his retirement before moving back and settling in Abbotsford. .
From an early age, Terry was an avid drag racer and continued racing into his 70's. He combined his love of racing with his policing career in a community relations capacity by bringing his dragster to numerous community events as a policing participant.
Terry was also an avid racquetball player. He had a gregarious and engaging personality, a great sense of humour accompanied by a ready smile, and he was an excellent raconteur.
Terry and Callie took great enjoyment in entertaining friends and family at their home, with their dogs at hand, and where he enjoyed a good cigar and a dram of whisky. He will be sorely missed by all, including his police, drag-racing and racquetball buddies.
There will be no service.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 14, 2018, from 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm, at Quality Inn Conference Centre, 36035 North Parallel Road, 2nd Floor, Abbotsford, BC. Tributes begin at 1:30 pm. Snacks, tea & coffee and No Host (cash) bar.

Terry was a great police officer, field trainer and all around good person. It was a pleasure to work with him and learn from him. Policing was his true calling and I was honored to be a part of it. He was a great example for all new police officers to follow. Rest in peace Terry!

I just, recently, learned of Terry's passing. We first met at Edith Cavell Elementary in grade one. From there we attended King Edward High School until graduation. Through the years we attended social functions, camping trips, and hung around with the same crowd. Terry was always kind, generous and fun to be around. Although we went our separate ways, after graduation, we were able to get caught up at High School reunions. Terry will be sadly missed. What a great loss to the Highland community.

I asked Terry if he would say a few words at his friend Bill Phillips induction to the Motorsports Pioneer society. ( Terry already was a a member). So he drove from Penticton to Vancouver made a hilarious speech turned around and drove back to Penticton. His perpetual smile was always happiest behind the wheel. Terry will not RIP and there will be no peace for his pals. He will be entertaining , telling stories smiling, talking fast and hoisting a few while MAZ and Phillips sit back thinking , "what happened to the quiet! " Thanks for the memories Ter and for always being a stand up guy.

I always thought he was a saint being the co driver of an overloaded Winnebago and a dozen kids on a road trip to Vegas and L.A. He made sure we had fun in Disneyland and Knotts Berry Farm as well. Rest in Peace Terry.

Condolences from the Powell River Drag Racing community. Terry was always a fierce competitor and still a gentleman at the track. We spent time with him at Mission and Ashcroft, he always had a great story or some friendly advice. He will be missed. From his friends at the Upper Mainland Racing Association

So very sorry to hear of Terry's passing. Max and I met Terry and Callie on our honeymoon, and stayed at their B&B in Kelowna in 2004. We have very fond memories of Terry not being able to come out to play, and us being godparents to the dogs, breaking wine glasses, trying the hot hot chicken and meeting wonderful people...We were lucky to visit in Summerland before they moved, you are always in our good memories. Great guy that makes me smile to have known....love to you Callie

I was lucky enough to meet Terry through his wife, my cousin. I've had many opportunities to hang out with them, over the course of their marriage, with a particularly special Alaskan Cruise as one highlight! Terry always had a warm smile and a funny story to share. A secret pleasure of his seemed to be to make people smile!
My cousin was lucky to share a happy and long marriage with Terry - yet the sad truth is that it wasn't enough time!'

Will miss Terry's incredible smile he had for everyone. Enjoyed his homemade red wine and his incredibly hot curried chicken!! Loved hearing his Vancouver PD stories, no one could tell a story like Terry could. He was proud of his career with Vancouver PD and I am proud to be able to call him FRIEND. Whenever I hear the loud roar of an engine, will think of Terry....vroom vroom on to your next journey...

Terry was my friend, my good neighbour when I was just 13 years old. He introduced me to a lifelong love of Drag racing and allowed me to come along on many of his race outings ( he always won!) around that time my father passed away and it was a very hard time for me but Terry showed me kindness and friendship and he became a very positive male role model to me and I always felt grateful for it. I am richer for knowing him. Thank's Terry.....your buddy Brock Reid
