Leroy Cage Jr, aka ‘Lil Chief’ was born December 29, 1934 in Vicksburg, MS to the late Roy and Katie Mae (Ford) Cage. Chief departed this earthly life on July 29, 2021 at Henry Ford Allegiance Hospice Home @ 0234 am surrounded by his daughter Theresa Johnson and sister Mary Lee Travis.
Chief accepted Christ at an early age and was member of Leggett Chapel Zion AME Church, where is worked diligently around the church, sang the Male Chorus and cooked on special occasions until his health wouldn’t allow him to do so.
Chief was educated in the Vicksburg School System, leaving school after the 8th grade to help work on the farm with the family. Leroy moved to Albion in 1954, he was employed at The Albion Mallable for many years, before retiring in 1986, opening “Crossroads Family Restaurant” later than same year along side his wife Peggy Bell.
Chief met Peggy Bell in 1959 in Albion, MI and they were united in holy matrimony in 1961. Chief was loving, devoted father to Joyce (Summerour) Blake, Theresa Johnson and Sharonda Wilson. He raised and reared his grandchildren as if they were his own. He was as great supporter of all their academic and sporting events. Chief loved his family more than life, as you could it see in his actions and everyday life. Chief was well known for his “Action packed stories of how he could break a table in half or break your neck with his bare hands.”
Chief leaves to cherish his memories 2 daughters: Theresa (Edward) Johnson of Hiram, GA and Sharonda (Robert Earl) Wilson of Albion, MI. 9 Grandchildren: Durrell Summerour, Courtney, DeShaun, Adrian, Darius Cage, LaPortia (Jerrod) Smith, Quianna Wilson, Mykael & Carleigh Brown. 14 Great-grandchildren: Carles, Darrion, Aurrion, Dylan and Ryan Summerour, Courion Cage, Christianna Gibson, Deshaun Cage Jr, Aurora Cage, Jerren Wilson, Jerrod Smith II, Trinity Wilson, Jalila and Jaylianna & Jasir Harvey. 2 Great-great grandchildren: Laila Summerour & Jace Summerour. 1 brother WC Cage of Minneapolis, MN, 3 sisters: Mary Lee Travis, Rubertha Jones (Phillip Wilson), Dorothy (Reginald) Shelly all of Albion. 2 Godchildren: Bradley Etchison & Dedric Gamble Sr, bonus son, Todd Robinson and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins & friends.
He was predeceased by his wife, Peggy Bell, parents, daughter, Joyce Blake. Sisters: Rosie Lidge, Ann Kennedy & Idella Hornes, brother: Herman Cage.
Funeral Service will be held Monday, August 2, 2021 beginning with family hour at 12PM until the time of service at 1PM at Freeway Church, 28900 B. Drive N, Albion, MI. Burial will follow at Albion Memory Gardens.
