Steve and I are so fortunate that we purchased our house across the street from the Heyranas. Tita Nena planted perennial, flowering plants in our front yard when we were just new home owners who knew nothing about landscaping. We continue to enjoy those plants over two decades later. It was an example of Tita Nena's generosity of spirit. Now she has left a legacy of beauty. May you enjoy heaven's eternal blooms.
Rest in love.

Biography

Nena Y. Heyrana passed away peacefully in her sleep on March 24th, 2021 at the age of 96 in her home, surrounded by her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Monterola Heyrana Sr., on April 25th, 1996. They had celebrated 45 years of marriage together and were blessed with seven children.

Nena was born on September 16th, 1924 in Cebu, Philippines, the daughter of Bonifacio A. Yap, Sr. and Irenea Flores Yap. She graduated from Cebu Normal College with a Bachelor's Degree in Education. She taught English and Math at Cebu City Central Elementary School in the Philippines. She immigrated to the United States of America in 1982 and first worked as an office administrator at Strayer College, then was employed by the U.S. Department of Foreign Affairs as a Language and Culture Instructor teaching Cebuano to diplomats and state department employees. After she retired, she spent her days caring for and raising her numerous grandchildren. She also made many trips back home to the Philippines and created a library in her home for the underprivileged school children in her hometown of Ilihan, Cebu.

Nena was a devout Catholic her entire life and had been a faithful member of Saint Louis Catholic Church in Alexandria, VA since 1984. Throughout her 96 years of life, she participated in many pilgrimages with her Catholic travel group, such as Jerusalem, Lourdes, Spain, Portugal, France, Germany, Rome, and Italy. She also enjoyed traveling for leisure with her college friends all around the US and Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, and China.

Nena is survived by her siblings Carmen Yap, Bonifacio Yap, Jr., and Leticia Alafriz; her children Joel, Edgar (married to Lulu), Roy (married to Brenda), Pablo "Paul" Jr. (married to Joy), Lorna (married to Lito) Dacurawat, Allan (married to Jocelyn), and Gina Heyrana; her grandchildren Gerard (married to Malen), Dev (married to Jay de Leyos), Kay (married to Francis) de la Cruz, Andre (soon to be wed to Susan), Hans, Katrina (married to Carlos Oronce), Nikki, Jan (married to Mike) Howlett, Ryan, Janis, Alana, Jerome, and Jessye; and her great-grandchildren Haize, Angelo, Madelynn, Gabriel, Quinn, Abigail, Rowan, and Kailer.

Nena will always be remembered as the Queen Matriarch of The Heyranas and the center of our family's universe. She will also be remembered by her friends and townspeople as a caring, charitable person who continuously gave back to her community and make others' lives better. As a family, we would like her legacy as a philanthropist and educator to go on in her memory and continue to make a difference in other people's lives. The Heyrana Family would like to set up an endowment in her name to deserving school children in her hometown. In lieu of flowers, donations for this endowment would be appreciated. More information will be provided at a later date.
