Doris V. Gaffney Estep passed away peacefully on July 16, 2018. She was born January 27, 1921, the daughter of William and Ethel (Stoop) Vogt in Brooklyn, NY. She attended Great Neck High School and Southern Seminary. On October 13, 1945, she married her high school sweetheart, David B. Gaffney. He preceded her in death on August 2, 1964. On March 8, 1968, she married Samuel D. Estep, who passed away on July 8, 2006. She was also predeceased by her stepson, David Estep.
The Gaffney Family moved to Ann Arbor in 1950. Doris and her husband raised their two boys, and she began her career at the University of Michigan, retiring after 23 years from the position of Executive Secretary to the Board of Regents. She also served as secretary to three University presidential search committees.
Doris was a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She leaves behind her sons, Bruce (Rebecca) Gaffney and Mark (Cynthia) Gaffney; step-children Michael (Marcia) Estep, Julie Estep (Tony Penglase), daughter-in-law Fatima Estep; grandchildren, Elizabeth Gaffney Lee, Mark (Melissa Richter) Gaffney, Jr., Megan Gaffney (Bryce) Davenport, Jennifer Schommer, James Estep, Lachlan and Ellie Penglase, Ibrihim, Hajar, Sofiyah, Ahmed Estep, Maryam Nilhawi, and many great-grandchildren. We remember her as a terrific cook, a fantastic hostess, a lover of dance, and a world-wide traveler, always looking forward to her next adventure.
