Mary Elizabeth Haavisto

Haavisto, Mary Elizabeth (nee Schneeberger) died Friday, August 10, 2018 at Birchwood Estates Assisted Living in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Mary Elizabeth was born February 22, 1928 in Ann Abor, Michigan to the late Adolph and Augusta (nee Bucklin) Schneeberger. Mary was the youngest of three children, born after her sister, Gretchen and brother, Richard. She attended Bach Elementary, Slauson Junior High and Ann Arbor High School, graduating in 1945. Mary married Reuben O. M. Haavisto on September 12, 1953 at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church. Mary and Reuben had three children: Matthew, Mark and Margaret “Meg”. Her parents Adolph and Augusta, husband Reuben, her brother, Richard and sister, Gretchen preceded Mary in death. She is survived by her sons Matthew (Heike), Mark (Carol) and daughter Margaret Fett; also, five granddaughters Kelsey, Jenna, Jessica, Meredith and Lydia. Mary has many nieces and nephews, including the children of (Gretchen and Tony Kruse) Steve, Sue, Jon and Jill and the children of (Richard and Jeanette Schneeberger) Peter, Phil and Tom. Before marrying Reuben, Mary worked at the Sheehan Insurance Agency. She also worked for Edwards Brothers Publishing from 1965 to 1995, retiring after 30 years as an Inspector. Mary enjoyed traveling, volleyball, bowling, cards (especially euchre and cribbage), beagles, and even took up skiing in her 50’s. She was social and liked to laugh. She was kind-hearted and generous. Mary stayed active in her church throughout her life. She was a lifelong Michigan Wolverines fan. A memorial service will be Wednesday, August 22 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1400 W Stadium Blvd, Ann Arbor, Michigan 48103 with visitation at 10:00 and service at 11:00. A light luncheon will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Trinity Lutheran’s building fund or the SPCA. Mary will be missed by her family and friends.
