Towner, Mary Louise

Mary Lou passed away peacefully in her sleep January 19, at the Memory Support Center in Saline, Michigan with her family at her side. She was born August 11, 1920 in Port Huron, Michigan to the late Milo and Gertrude (White) Young. She was the youngest of four children who have all preceded her in death. Upon graduating from East Lansing High School and the Lansing School of Business, she worked for the radio station WJIM in East Lansing. She became an avid MSU Spartan! She was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Ann Arbor and most recently a member of St. Lucy's Catholic Church of Highland Beach, Florida. She has lived in Ann Arbor since 1946 where she was active in the Junior Chamber of Commerce. She was also a volunteer in the children's ward at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital and for the American Cancer Society. Over her life, she had been a member of the 20th Century Club, the Lucille B. Conger Alumni Group, the Ann Arbor Women's City Club, Barton Hills Country Club, the Delray Beach Club and the Royal Palm Golf and Yacht Club in Florida, where she wintered. She enjoyed playing golf, and was an avid bridge player and delighted many over the years with her ability to play the piano and organ simultaneously by ear! She cherished her family, especially anyone who would be brave enough to challenge her at a game of cribbage or euchre! She was very proud of having had a perfect cribbage hand! In 1965, she married Eugene H. Towner, who was the love of her life. He predeceased her in 1987. She is survived by her daughters Marylou (Mitzi) R. Estes (Curtis), Robin Arnold Lammers and her son Fred L. Arnold all of Ann Arbor. She was "Galou" to her grandchildren Tracy M.(Estes) Barth of Durham, N.C., Curtis ("C.J.") W. Estes, Jr. (Tami) of Wixom, Mi, Jonathan P. Lammers (Christine) of Canton, Mi, Bradley A. Lammers (Michelle) of Canton, Mi. and Miles Towner Arnold of Ann Arbor, Mi. She had seven great-grandchildren: John and Andy Barth, Lindsay and Brendan Estes, "J.P." and Tyler Lammers, Blake Lammers. Cremation has taken place, and per her request, a private service will take place at a later date. Those wishing to make memorial contributions may do so to the Alzheimer's Association, the Brecon Memory Support Center at Brecon Village, or the charity of one's choice. Arrangements entrusted to the Muehlig Funeral Chapel.

Dear Mitzi, Robyn and Freddy.

I smiled when I read Mary Newton's note at the beginning of these messages. Our parent's group of friends had so much fun together and they extended their enjoyment of life to all of us kids. We were all very lucky to have been included in that large extended family.

I'm thinking of you all at this time.

Fondly, Jacquie Baird Spiher

To Mary Lou's Family,
I had the distinct honor of caring for Mary Lou at the Memory Center at Brecon Village. She was one of the kindest and funniest people I have ever met. She sure loved her family and she loved life. She made my day a true joy. I left the Memory Center to work at another part of Brecon Village, but I continued to visit Mary Lou. I will miss her, but it sure is nice to know that we have a very special Angel watching over us. My deepest sympathies to all of you. Jan Wiedmeyer

Dear Mitzi, Robyn, and Freddy,

Dear Mitzi, Robyn, and Freddy, I was so sad to read that your Mom passed away. All the wonderful childhood memories raced into my mind. Sleeping out on the porch, having countless,mock-weddings in the sunken living room, endless sleepovers. Your mom was always so sweet to me. We wanted you to know that you kids are all in our thoughts. I won't forget her. Peter and Patty Fink
