Susan W. Doherty
July 2, 1938 – September 27, 2019
On Friday, September 27, 2019, Susan ‘Sue’ W. Doherty, loving mother and grandmother, passed away at the age of 81. Sue was born on July 2, 1938 in York, PA to Eugene and Elizabeth (Bruce) Wile. She attended Cedar Crest College. Sue went on to earn her nursing degree from The Pennsylvania Hospital School of Nursing in 1959 and her BA from St. Joe’s College in Standish, ME in 1991. She worked as a cardiac and ER Nurse at South Baltimore/Harbor Hospital. She has two sons, David and Shawn, and one daughter, Heather.
Sue loved her family. Even when her knees wouldn’t work, she would find a way to get on the floor to play with her grandchildren! Sue loved animals, especially dogs. If all dogs were treated as well as hers, they would all be happy, healthy, well-loved companions. She enjoyed several creative hobbies including knitting, crocheting, jewelry making, gardening, and painting pottery. Sue enjoyed traveling with family and friends, whether it was one of many road trips she turned into a grand adventure, a visit to Disney World (one of her favorite destinations) or a cruise with all of her friends from the hospital. The beach was always a happy place where she loved to walk on the sand and enjoy the sunshine, corn on the cob, and sticky buns. She will be remembered for her wonderful laugh, exceptional work ethic, and feisty spirit.
Susan was preceded in death by her father, Norman Eugene ‘Gene’, mother, Elizabeth ‘Betty’, brother, Scott, and granddaughter Ashley. She is survived by her sons David, and Shawn, daughter, Heather, her “favorite” daughter-in-law, Jennifer, her “favorite” son-in-law, Gene, and her grandchildren Paige, Griffin, Liam, Aidan, and Michelle, as well as nieces and nephews.
A memorial service and celebration of life will be held at 12 noon on November 9, 2019 at Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester St, Annapolis, MD 21401. Susan will be laid to rest at Prospect Hill Cemetery in York, PA with her parents, Gene and Betty Wile. If desired, donations can be sent to the SPCA of Anne Arundel County.
