Ingalill "Inga" Lindmark Mosonov Avis

Leaving her family, friends and the relative comforts of the familiar behind, Ingalill left Sweden for the United States in 1967 to study and search for a cure for cancer. She was uncertain of the road ahead but unafraid of the challenges before her.

Ingalill “Inga” Hermansdotter Lindmark Mosonov Avis pursued and achieved her dream of becoming a scientist of oncology for 45 years. Unfortunately, it was cancer that ended her life on Tuesday, September 14, 2021 in her home in Apex, North Carolina.

Born in Skellefteå, Sweden, in 1942 to Herman and Martha Lindmark, she was the oldest sister to Desiree and Kenneth. She learned the value of helping others from her parents and ultimately completed her degree in nursing.

In 1972 at eight months pregnant with her son, David, Inga tragically lost her husband, Josef Mosonov, in an auto accident. In 1974, she married Dr. Fred Avis. Two years later, they had a daughter, Madelene.

The majority of Inga’s scientific career was at the National Institutes of Health and the National Cancer Institute in the field of cancer research. She has been published in medical journals of distinction nearly 50 times and has first authored almost a dozen times—always with the goal to rid this world of cancer.

Anyone who knew Inga was touched by her giving heart. She always worked hard to learn and remember someone’s name and always set out to learn something about others so they would feel comfortable and welcome. In fact, making others feel welcome was her specialty. She loved to entertain because it made people happy, and she derived so much joy from making people happy. She loved to raise a glass of champagne and say “Skål.”

Being an American citizen was one of Inga’s many great loves. But no love was greater than the love for her children and grandchildren. Inga is survived by her sister, Desiree; her children, David and Madelene; her grandchildren, Dylan, Autumn, Reagan and Kennedy; her children-in-law, Renee and Brandon; and her extended family in Sweden, Madeleine, Ellinor, and Mathias and their children, and Inger.

In honor of her service to make this world a better place, heaven now holds her close in its embrace, in celebration of all the good that her research and her life has brought to bear.

A Celebration of Life will be held in her honor at Cambridge Village of Apex on Friday, September 24, 2021, at 12 p.m.
