I was married to a co-worker of Jola & John at College Of The Mainland many years ago before they moved to North Carolina.  I was his oldest daughter Shelley's T-Ball Coach. His son Billy played Little League Football in the same league I was a coach in but on a different age group. John & Jola were always there for their children.  We missed them around here after they sold their home near the college and moved away. My wife and I have longed been divorced so I did not learn of John's death until I was surfing the internet...a while ago and stumbled upon the news! May God bless Jola and the kids and I was glad to see they are grown up and happy with families. Charles Douglas. ( Beverly )

I took Physics 101 with Dr. Hubiscz in 1995 at NCSU after coming close to failing Honors Physics for Engineers, having never taken a physics class in my life.  Almost 25 years later, I still think of lessons in his class regularly. This morning I learned of his passing after reading a WIRED physics discussion of the new Tesla trucks’s bulletproof window demonstration and thinking about Dr. Hubiscz again and googling his name.  He was an amazing teacher and I feel lucky to have been taught by him.  Condolences to the family. 

Jola - I am so sorry to learn of John's passing.  You and your family have my deepest condolences.  I was with my son in Bloomington, IN, when I got the sad news via FB.  Griff had just had surgery. I will write you soon but wanted to post here.   I regret that I haven't seen much of you and John over the years.  I suspect that as an opinionated progressive myself, John & I may not have always agreed on certain issues, but I admire him for his essential goodness & kindness & his dedication to helping others & to advancing science education.  I'm glad his library will find a good home. I know you are dealing with your loss  with your innate faith, dignity, and strength.  I'm glad that you & John made such a good life together & for your children for so many years.  You both have been such a blessing to so many.

Dear Jola,

So sorry to hear the news of John, and regret I couldn't be with you at the funeral. 

So many pleasurable memories of John during his time at NC State.  Thanks for recalling the Packard Foundation middle school science text study. John deserves all the credit -  totally his  work, relying on his attention to detail and his huge collection of physics books (quite something to visit his library!)  He was editor of the new books column in The Physics Teacher for many years. It was always a pleasure to read his mini-reviews. 

John had definite opinions as you know  - Al Gore and global warming in particular! - but was always so congenial in discussions. Your photo is exactly how I remember John! And who wouldn't enjoy being picked up in his gigantic Lincoln Continental for a ride down to the John Locke foundation meetings. 

When he came to NC from Texas one of the first things he said was "why does't NC have a local American Association of Physics Teachers chapter?" At the time we were part of a large mid-Atlantic group. So he went to work to form an NC chapter, generated all the interest, and was the first President. And here we are,  still going strong decades later. On the side he also found time  to be a mentor to chess teams in some of the local schools. 

Many thanks to both of you for how much you've contributed to the life and vitality of the NC State community and our  local community.

Jola, I feel so privileged to have  had both of you in my life. John was a great man, and memories of him , his accomplishments and his sense of humor will remain with me always.  Loved his intelligence and his smile. God bless and keep you. 

We met John, Jola and their children when he was the deacon for Queen of Peace in La Marque, Texas. He was a tireless servant giving his time and effort to serving God, his church, his students and his  parishioners.  In our case,  during the Christmas break of 1986, he graciously tutored our daughter in physics when she was attending Texas A& M. We enjoyed his homilies, especially when he would draw his moral and ethical lessons from J R R Tolkien’s books The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings. The world has lost wonderful man, father and servant of the Lord.

I worked with John at College of the Mainland and admired him greatly, as well as his wife Jola.  I trust the family will accept my sincere condolences.

Our heartfelt condolences to John's family.  We know John from our church as our deacon and Santa Claus.  To say John will be missed is only half the story.  He was a big part of our parish and we looked forward to seeing him every week and having our conversations.  Our church will surely be emptier without him.  God bless.

So sorry to hear about our old friend Johnny Hubisz.  Richard went to 8 yrs of grammar school at St. John' s , Peabody, MA and freshman year at St. John's PREP with him.   He was Lois' (Amaral) neighbor on Northend Street and remembers him for his dancing skills at the St. Thomas CYO dances on Friday nights.  Not surprising to us to read of the wonderful experiences he enjoyed throughout his life.  He was an exceptional  person.  Our condolences go out to his family at this sad time..


I was sorry to learn of John's passing. May his family find some comfort for their great loss in the promise found at John 11:25.

I had John as my Physics teacher at College of the Mainland in the early 80's. He was man who enjoyed science and had a knack for teaching it. May the Lord show you all the universe's wonders and we are not prevy to now.  You will be missed.

Our deepest sympathy to all of John's Family.  John and I grew up on the same street in Peabody, Mass.  John graduated from St. John's Prep in Danvers, Mass with my cousin Manny Mello (deceased).  I reconnected with John many years later when he served as a Deacon at St. Mary Magdalene when he came to my parish, St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Apex,  for various special Masses, where I have been an usher for many years.  What a small world; to know that someone who grew up on the same street  would connect with me years  later in North Carolina.  I remember John's large family with many siblings and hope to see some of them , sadly, at his funeral.  May God's blessings be upon you dear John (Santa Claus) upon your final journey into the arms of our Heavenly Father.

John is survived by his wife of 42 years, Jola Griffith Hubisz; daughters: Shelly Hubisz and Francie Seymour (Mike); sons: Myke Hubisz and Billy Hubisz (Donzetta); sisters: Martie Verlander, Mary Fraser; brothers: Joseph, Jan Peter, Jeremy and Jeoff Hubisz; grandchildren: Cory, Joshua, Darian, Sebastian, Nicole and Tisha; and great grandchildren, Ember and Josh.   He was preceded in death by his parents, John Lawrence Hubisz, Sr, and Mary Agnes Fleming Hubisz; sister, Marilyn MacCaffrey; brother, James Hubisz; and daughter-in-law, Kathy Campbell.
