Ezequiel, natives of San Luis Potosi, Mexico. Soon after her graduation from North
Dallas High School, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and Hitler declared war on
the U.S. Like so many American women of her generation, Hazel joined the American
response, as a secretarial assistant for the War Office. In November of 1943, she
married PFC Henry Velez, Jr. While he was recovering from wounds in an Army
hospital in the Philippines, Hazel Velez gave birth in 1945 to her son, Larry. Glen
followed a few years later, in 1949. She continued her 30-year career at Republic
National Bank in Dallas. She and Henry were married for almost 63 years, until his
death separated them in 2005. Hazel and Henry were both animal lovers, and shared
their lives with many dogs. Her last dog, Milo, bridged the end of Henry's life until 2018,
serving as Hazel's faithful companion
She was a loving wife and mother, and a lifelong advocate of the benefits of Mexican
rice (she was also famous for her cheese and onion enchiladas) and the presence of
women in the workforce.
She is survived by her sons, Larry, of Washington, DC, and Glen, of Montclair, New Jersey; grandchildren, Melinda Frazer of Midlothian, TX, Stephen of Mount Ranier, MD, and Nicholas of Washington, DC; great-grandchildren, Morgan Hargrove, Berkley Kreidermacher, Dawson and Austin Frazer, and Hawk and Skyler Velez; great-great grandchildren, Matthew Clark and Hallie Joy Hargrove; and Jack Kreidermacher.
