Mable “Dean” Matheson, age 91 of Grand Prairie, passed away peacefully on May 25, 2020. She was born on September 18, 1928 on a ranch in Healy, Kansas, the daughter of Roy Watt and Beulah K. Baxter Watt. Dean married Wayne Matheson and they celebrated 60 years of marriage together before his passing in 2011.
Dean is survived by her son Steve Matheson, daughter Susan Grom and husband Christopher, sister-in-law Solita Hatman, and many loving nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers, and four sisters.
Dean was a self-determined woman who graduated valedictorian of her high school and was then granted a permit to teach in public schools. From there she attended Fort Hays State University and received her Bachelor of Arts degree in art, and met her husband-to-be, Wayne. She then went on to teach high school, kindergarten and elementary school students, before and after getting married, and taught for many years at Prairie Heights Methodist Church and for Grand Prairie ISD, in tandem with raising her two beloved children. Dean was gifted in her artistic abilities, creating many ceramics and paintings, singing in choirs and solos, and composing poetry. She was a member of The Woods United Methodist Church, Grand Prairie. Dean’s greatest time was spent with her family and friends, who will miss her deep empathy for others, her playful humor and her heart of gold.
The family also wishes to thank our Mom’s LTC home, Abby’s Place, we are sincerely grateful to them for the outstanding care they gave her.
