Josephyne Waples Fleps, 100, of Washington, DC, passed away peacefully on June 19, 2018.
Josephyne was born to the late Dr. Joseph and Florence Waples on April 1, 1918 in Georgetown, DE. She attended The Baldwin School in Bryn Mawr, PA and the King-Smith Studio School in Washington, DC. In October, 1949, she married Carl J. Fleps, a United States Marine Corps officer who retired as Brigadier General. They raised three children and moved over 15 times. With each new home, Josephyne excelled as a decorator, gardener, and hostess. Devoted to education and the arts, she was an expert in early American furniture, served as a docent at the Winterthur Museum in Wilmington, DE, and created extraordinary original crewel embroidery. But, always, family came first: Josephyne was a passionate, devoted and much loved mother.
Gen. Fleps died in 2007. Josephyne will be buried with him at Arlington National Cemetery. Survivors include her children, Christina Fleps (Charley Hardwick) of Washington, DC, John Fleps (Nelsy) of Southlake, TX, Peter Fleps (Julie) of Evanston, IL, seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
