

Frederic Lloyd Shuman, age 79, passed away April 14, 2020 after a long battle with vascular dementia. Fred was born on August 5, 1940 in Hutchinson, Kansas to Gayle and Vivian (Lynch) Shuman. Oldest of three siblings. Diane and Philip being his younger siblings. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Diane.
In 1958, Fred graduated from Buhler High School in Hutchinson, KS. After graduation, he enlisted in the Army. He spent three years in Vicenza, Italy attached to 69th Ordnance Co APO 221. In 1961, he enrolled at Wichita State University and obtained his bachelor’s degree in Education. 1965 -1971 were years spent in the U.S. Naval Reserve. In 1967, he earned his first master’s degree in Music at Wichita State University. He earned his second master’s degree in 1992 at Iliff School of Theology, University of Denver, Denver, CO. His professional career ranged from auto mechanic, furniture salesman, teacher in various elementary schools, minister for United Methodist churches throughout Colorado, and a professor of Philosophy at Pueblo and Pikes Peak Community Colleges.
Fred loved the time he spent as a licensed ham radio operator, call sign WB5VLG, in Arkansas and later in Colorado. He developed a fascination with Civil War black powder guns and became a collector. He enjoyed the outdoors especially cross-country skiing and hiking. He enjoyed taking walks and learning to country dance with his wife Mary.
Fred is survived by his wife Mary J. (Criss) Shuman of Colorado Springs; his four step-children, Shanna,, Paul, Steve, and Gene Kokayko; his brother Phil and wife Jerri of Colby, KS and their three children, Melissa, Elizabeth and Rebecca; and various cousins and other family members not mentioned individually above.
He will be greatly missed but we take comfort in knowing that he is no longer suffering. He is at peace and with God.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to a dementia or veteran’s group of your choice. His wife cherished the dementia awareness Facebook website but unfortunately it is run by caregivers and does not accept donations. Fred has always been proud of his military service and one of his biggest regrets was not pursuing a career in the military.
