Michael Don Wiblin, known to his friends as “Mike”, passed away at his home on Friday, April 12, 2019. Mike is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary Hamilton Wiblin. He is also survived by a brother Howard Wiblin, who lives in West Virginia. Mike was born in West Virginia and arrived in Hanover County in 1973 to assume the job of Director of Agriculture Stabilization Conservation Service (“ASCS”). Mike served 30 years in the U.S. Navy Reserve, including 2 years active duty in Vietnam aboard the air craft carrier Intrepid, now the Air and Space Museum in NYC. Mike retired from the ASCS in 1996 with 30 years of service. In 1990 Mike and Mary bought a Hanover County farm of 20 acres on which they grew vegetables. Mike sold the vegetables at many local farmer’s markets, including the Ashland farmer’s market where he was known as “Dollar Mike.” Mike and Mary retired from farming in 2018. Mike’s vegetables and stories will be sorely missed by his many good friends. His family will receive friends at the Nelson Funeral Home, 412 S. Washington Highway, Ashland Va., on Tuesday, April 16, from 4 to 7 p.m. Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel of the Nelsen Funeral Home Reid Chapel Wednesday, April 17, at 11 a.m. followed by interment at Signal Hill Memorial Park, 12360 Hanover Courthouse Rd; Hanover, Virginia 23069.

Mike & I crossed paths when he helped out during a winter at Charter Flowers...but he made it clear, farming was his passion & first priority! Instantly, he became an amazing friend! His contagious smile, witty personality, his guidance & knowledge plus his amazing show of love for his sidekick-Mary was refreshing & a plus to life! He will be truly missed and the Farmers markets won’t be the same without his presence. My love, thoughts & prayers for sweet Mary.
