Peacefully, with family by her side, Genevieve Millar passed away at the Menno Home for the Aged in Grunthal, Manitoba, on Tuesday, November 5, 2019 at the age of 91 years. Predeceased by her husband of 46 years, Scott Miller in 1995 she is survived by her children Christine Millar Chase, Reg (Debbie) Millar, and Neil (Linda) Millar; grandchildren Geoffrey, Brittany, Jonathan, Christian, Andrew; step granddaughters Chrystal and Shyla; as well as many extended family members and close friends. The family later moved to a farm east of Willow Bunch, and in spite of the struggles of the Depression years, were happy. She remembered the many community and church events that they enjoyed—dances, picnics, baseball games, and Sunday neighbourhood visits. Geny was a particularly intelligent woman with strong math skills and was offered a job as a clerk in Wilson’s General Store in Willow Bunch, where she worked during and after the war years. It was there that she met her future husband, Scott Millar, who had served as a soldier during the war. One day Scott returned to the store to talk to her—claiming that the jacket she’d sold him was the wrong size. They were married on November 22, 1949. Together, Scott and Geny raised their family, Christine, Reg, and Neil, on a farm south of Willow Bunch. Geny was completely devoted to her family and worked very hard—to this day the family fondly remembers the basement walls lined with shelves of vegetables, fruit, pickles, and carrot puddings that she would preserve every year. She also enjoyed visits with extended family members, and over the years, hosted many a Sunday dinner for aunts, uncles, and cousins. In her retirement, she found special joy in being a grandmother, and was always so happy to be with her grandchildren. Community life was also very important to Scott and Geny. For as long as her health permitted, Geny was an active member of the Catholic Women’s League and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion. She and Scott participated in and often helped to organize many local events such as dances, card tournaments, bingos, fund raisers, and Remembrance Day ceremonies. In her later years, when she moved to Assiniboia, Geny very much enjoyed viewing the art exhibits at the Shurniak Art Gallery, and happily agreed to volunteer at as a greeter at every opportunity. Because of her failing health and a desire to be nearer family, Geny moved out of province in her last years. Although these years were more difficult for her, she continued to take pleasure in reading, meeting new friends, and visiting with family. She will be lovingly remembered and truly missed. Funeral Service was celebrated Friday, November 15, 2019 at St. George’s Roman Catholic Church, Assiniboia, SK. Father Dennis Remot celebrant. A Tribute was given by Doris Giraudier. Urn Bearers were grandchildren Brittany Millar, Johnathan Millar, and Christian Millar. Interment was in the St. Ignace des Saules R. C. Cemetery, Willow Bunch, SK.
