Mammy was born in 1928, in Limestone County to John Arch Jackson and Edna K. Jackson. She was solid in her faith and an active member at Shanghai Baptist Church. She taught those around her to pray and trust Jesus, spreading the light and love of God in everything she did. She was a seamstress for many years at several different locations, and her expert sewing skills supported an avid love of quilting and dressmaking for her grandchildren. At her family home, on the hilltop, she was also well-known for her passion for gardening. In the garden, as in everything she attempted, she worked exceptionally hard. Among the myriad things family will miss are her “fried taters” and “greasy burgers” that were crafted from love and the fruits of her garden.
A caregiver at heart, Mammy devoted her life to those around her. She was steadfast in her love of God, despite significant hardships, and is remembered by those close to her as a woman of incredible strength, compassion, and humor. She frequently told those around her that she loved them “more than her own life,” and she proved her love by embracing all of the children in her family, raising first her own children, then playing an essential role in the upbringing of her grandchildren. She is dearly missed by her loved ones, who will celebrate the fact that she is at peace, reunited with Jesus and her loved ones in Heaven.
Mammy was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Pettus McSherry Sr, to whom she was married 52 years, and an infant daughter, Maria McSherry. She is survived by her three children: Virginia A. Wallace (with husband Dennis Wallace), Ted E. McSherry, and Charles P. McSherry Jr. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Johnny “Mike” McConnell (and wife Kristan McConnell), Maria C. McSherry (and wife Lynsie Lamitie), Senna Kay Marks (and husband Drew Marks), Mia Black (and husband Peter Acha), Dusty Lee Wallace (and wife Whitney Wallace), Derek Lynn Wallace, and Elizabeth McSherry. Furthermore, she is survived by great-grandchildren Kessa McConnell, Leanna Wallace, Savannah McSherry-Buttleman, and Jacqueline Share.
There will be a graveside service at Antioch Cemetery Wednesday, March 21, 2018 at 2 p.m. with Brother Charlie McAdams officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday, March 20th from 6-9 p.m. at McConnell Funeral Home.
