Dolores P. Atherton
November 17, 1930 – January 5, 2021
Tuesday, January 5, 2021, Dolores P. Atherton passed away after her 12-day courageous battle with COVID at Northside Hospital. Dolores was born on November 17, 1930 in Atlanta, Georgia, the beautiful only child of Lillian McAdams and Ivey M. Parlier. In November of 1949 she met the love of her life, Harry K. Atherton; they married two months later in January of 1950. Dolores and Harry welcomed their first daughter Mary Elizabeth, in November of 1950. Their second daughter, Marcia Ann was born in March of 1953. Harry and Dolores joined the young Northside Methodist Church where they raised both of their daughters. Dolores and Harry were both involved in the church helping with Methodist Youth Fellowship and Wednesday night suppers for many years. They were also involved in their Sunday School class and Dolores loved working in her Church Circle. She retired from her career at Western Electric and became a passionate shopper, especially looking for bargains. She was a wonderful cheerleader for family and friends and made thousands of her World Famous Cheese Biscuits for all get-togethers. Dolores loved her family vacations, especially time at East Beach on Saint Simons Island, including time walking her dog Max on the beach and eating at the Crab Trap. Her favorite trips included a long drive to South Dakota with her great-grandkids and grandson-in-law, singing along with Neil Diamond CDs and sharing stories the whole time. She enjoyed getting her daily AJC so she could complete the Sudoku puzzle, after reading the Obits and cartoons. Always the Favorite Patient of her doctors, she maintained this title in her last days in the Northside Hospital ICU. Eight years ago Dolores moved to Canterbury Court where she met a new group of friends. She was a favorite resident during her time there, always involved in parties and accumulation sales. Dolores never met a baby or toddler she couldn’t make smile. Her greatest joy was babysitting for her Granddaughter Jennifer and two Great Grandson’s Gabe and Gavin. Words are not enough to thank her personal care providers at Canterbury Court and the angels of the nursing staff at Northside Hospital for their extraordinary tender care Dolores received. Granny Dee or DeeDee was loved by all her family and friends.
Dolores is survived by her daughters Marcia Sandbach and Mary Dye, son-in-law, Mercer Dye, Granddaughter Jennifer Dye Parker and Grandson-in-law, Kelly Parker, and two Great Grandsons Gabriel and Gavin Parker.
A private graveside service was held and a later public celebration of Dolores will be enjoyed. In memory of Dolores donations may be made to Assistance League of Atlanta 3534 Broad Street, Chamblee, Georgia 30341 or Children’s HealthCare of Atlanta Foundation 1575 N. East Expressway, Atlanta, Georgia 30329.
