Born in Resaca, Georgia, on September 22, 1922, Mary was the daughter of Florence Kerr Causby and Carl T. Causby. After graduating from Crawford Long Hospital Nursing School, Mary began a nursing career that would carry her through various clinical care settings, especially as a neurological surgical nurse, as well as the special care she gave to family and friends during her entire lifetime.
During World War II, Mary relocated to Manhattan, a Georgia girl anxious to experience life in New York City.
She became Nurse Manager at the Lempert Institute of Endaural Surgery. This was one of the most innovative facilities in the country for successful treatment of hearing loss. Upon her return to Atlanta, she worked with Dr. Exum Walker, neurosurgeon, at Crawford Long Hospital.
Meanwhile, Mary’s husband, Francis D. Placido, DDS (Frank), of Boston, MA, was stationed in both Atlanta and New York while serving in the U.S. Army. He eventually settled in Atlanta to be closer to Mary. They were married in 1950 and lived in Atlanta for the rest of their lives.
While raising their family in Atlanta, Frank practices dentistry, and Mary entered nursing life again after studying for her BSN at University of St. Francis College in Joliet, Illinois. She was a Quality Control Manager (Epidemiologist) at the Metropolitan Eye and Ear Hospital in Atlanta, and the School Nurse at W.F. Dykes High School, where her children attended.
Mary is survived by her daughter Rosemary P. Bryant, son Marion F. (Bubba) Placido and wife Karen Placido, of Atlanta, and daughter Francis P. (Fran) and Kevin McCarey of Savannah; granddaughter Meredith B. and Wesley Snapp of Atlanta; granddaughter Addie Placido of Champaign, Illinois; and great grandson, Wesley Watson Snapp of Atlanta. She is preceded in death by her husband, Francis D. Placido; brothers Carl T. Causby and Frank Causby; parents Florence and Carl Causby; and Uncle Francis Kerr.
The family would like to express our deepest appreciation to Mary’s favorite caregivers, Denise Bowers and Janice Whaley, and as well as to many other wonderful ladies over the last five years.
Mary was, and encouraged all who came across her path, to be well read, well fed, and well-traveled. She was always planning her next worldwide adventure. She loved to return to her Florida home, which she kept for all to enjoy, for some fun in the sun. Her generosity and love for her family and friends was infinitely deep. She was a devoted, determined, and dignified lady who loved her family above all else.
Visitation is scheduled for Friday, May 25th, at the Patterson Funeral Home, 4:00-7:00pm (Oglethorpe Location: 4550 Peachtree Road NE Atlanta, Ga, 30319).
