Colby was born in Lubbock, Texas, grew up in Annapolis, Maryland, graduated from Lassiter High School in Marietta, Georgia, and attended Tarrant County College while living in the Dallas- Fort Worth area. After moving to Austin, he was employed as a chef in Austin’s vibrant food truck community and previously, worked in the insurance industry in both Austin and the DFW area. He was passionate about cooking for people and took great pleasure in seeing you smile after you tasted his creations. Colby loved playing golf, fishing, and spending time on the water with friends and family. He was a die-hard football fan, favoring the Dallas Cowboys and the Texas A&M Aggies. He also was a natural musician who played many instruments ‘by ear,’ and was the lead singer/songwriter for multiple bands.
Colby is preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Raymond F. Kennedy; paternal grandparents, Luther and Cassie Piper; and his beloved cat, Monday. He will be sadly missed by his mother, Karen McGraw and husband, Bruce; father, Jim Piper and wife, B.G.; brothers, Chris Piper and Patrick McGraw and wife, Cierra; sister, Marissa McGraw Hovingh and husband, Andrew; grandmother, Margaret Kennedy; nephews, Alex Piper and Julian “JJ” Hovingh; niece, Adelaide McGraw; many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins; numerous other relatives; and a host of friends.
A Celebration of Colby’s Life will be at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, July 21, 2018 in the Sanctuary of Lake Travis United Methodist Church, 1502 RR 620 North, Austin, Texas officiated by Rev. Scott Heare, Sr. Pastor.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like contributions to be made in Colby’s memory to Lake Travis United Methodist Church or to the YMCA Camp Flaming Arrow, c/o Greater San Antonio YMCA.
