David V. Vera
April 4, 1942 – April 7, 2018
David V. Vera was born on April 4, 1942 in Donna, Texas to Gilberto and Iris Vera. He passed gently from this life on April 7, 2018 surrounded by his beloved wife of fifty-six years, Mireya Vera; his children Yvette Wagner, wife of Chris Wagner, David James Vera, Jo-Iris Guillen, wife of Miguel Guillen, and Nancy Vera;grandchildren Kelley Wagner, fiancé of Philip Oakes, Coleman Wagner, Audrey Vera, Grayson Guillen and Griffin Guillen.
David and Mireya moved their young family to Austin in 1967. David was the owner/operator of David's Food Stores in South Austin. He was recognized by the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce as the Austin Hispanic Business Man of the Year in 1990. After 30 years of serving South Austin with his food stores, David sold his business and began other successful ventures that allowed him more time to spend with his family and serving his community. He was a loyal member of the Greater Southwest Optimist Club (GSWO) for many years and held multiple positions such as Vice President, Board member, Director, and Scholarship Committee member. He loved being part of the GSWO because of its efforts to help under privileged students achieve their educational goals and provide programs that benefit the youth in our community.
David was a successful business man and a true optimist but his passion was his faith and family. He served in his church, St. Ignatius, and pointed people to Jesus not so much by words but by his actions. Not only did he believe in the gospel of Jesus Christ but he truly lived it by his humble, gentle, patient and kind spirit. He was a man of his word, a gentleman, a loving husband, father, grandfather, and loyal friend to many. We rejoice in knowing that he is at home with his Heavenly Father.
The family will receive visitors from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM with a Celebration of Life service to begin at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, April 10, 2018, at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Greater Southwest Optimist Club Scholarship Fund P.O. Box 40746 Austin, Texas 78704, or www.gswoc.org.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you during this difficult time. Your Dad was a man among men. He was a brilliant example of what God intended for his Shepards. A Shepard to lead, and guard the sheep and protect the weak. I hold wonderful memories of your Dad because he loved us girls (Mary, Leigh Ann, Roxanne and Cathy) like his own. He wanted your friends to feel welcome in his house and he was always ready for a quick hug, be safe and don't do anything crazy! It's going to be hard. Especially, the first year as you go through the year of first. But, don't let that get you down. He's right there in every moment of your life. Love you bunches Vera Family!

How do you share a lifetime of memories? Uncle David was more than an uncle. He was a dear person and a wonderful man. I will always remember his life-affirming presence, his beautiful smile and his earnestness. He was so good to my parents and was such a fabulous brother-in-law to them. Many years ago, my Dave (who Uncle David called "Massey") and I had the privilege of sharing a ski vacation with Mireya and David and my Uncle Ramon and Aunt Ginger. We had such a fun time. I remember when "Massey" sped down the slope screaming for the rest of us to "get out of the way" and then he did a flip in the air when he hit a mogul and actually landed back on his skis! The rest of us ended up on the sides of the run in snow drifts, laughing our heads off. Uncle David just couldn't stop laughing! None of us could. I know we shall meet again, my dear Uncle. You were one of a kind. You were special. You were deeply loved and admired.
