In 1952 Eugene enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served as an aircraft jet engine mechanic. During his military career, Eugene served in Japan, the Philippines, Turkey, Indochina, Korea, Guam, Thailand and Vietnam. He also served at the Veterans Administration for over 20 years in their postal service until he retired.

Eugene was a unique, comedic, hardworking, loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He married Doris Harp in 1956 and together the couple had 4 children: Rodney Patches (wife Sue), Cathy McDaniel (husband Jeff), Vicky Byrd, and Randal Patches (wife Laileigh). Eugene had 9 grandchildren: Stephanie Roman, Ashley Scherr, Shawn Patches, Denton McDaniel, Dustin McDaniel, Joshua McDaniel, Michael Friar, Alexandra Byrd, and Keileigh Patches. Eugene was preceded in death by his father, Paul William Patches, and his mother, Anne Bertha Reich, both of Lebanon, Pennsylvania; and his brother, Richard Paul Patches, of Tempe Arizona.

His family and friends will remember him by his hilarious made up songs, roses are red verses, his love of God and church, and all the fun times they shared with him.
