Joyce Vivian Vietz, born November 12, 1928 in Washington, Indiana died peacefully surrounded by her children and grandchildren on August 2, 2020 in Austin, TX. Joyce grew up in Washington, Indiana and shared many loving and funny memories of her childhood. Joyce was a graduate of Olney School of Nursing, Olney, Illinois and became a registered nurse working as a surgical nurse at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. There she met and married the love of her life Hugo Vietz, a young medical student. They married in 1951 and enjoyed 52 years together.
Joyce’s warm smile defined her as she was joyful and compassionate with everyone she met. Joyce and Hugo were an amazing and a loving pair raising their five children in Fullerton, CA traveling and enjoying life. They worked together through the years opening up Hugo’s first medical practice in Illinois and later relocating to California. Joyce loved traveling with Hugo and the family, antiquing, creative cooking, creating art work and needle work of any kind. There was never a stray dog that needed a home Joyce could resist. Their house was always full of children, family, friends, neighbors, pets, laughter and love. In retirement, they continued traveling and usually visiting whoever a grandchild was being born. After Hugo’s passing in 2003, Joyce moved into The Conservatory, Austin, TX to be near her daughters. She enjoyed a life renewal making new friends, continuing her creative pursuits and joining into church life with passion.
Joyce is survived by her younger brother, Captain Donald Rayhill and sister-in-law Noel Rayhill, daughter Kathryn (Alexander), daughter Pamela (Vietz Ender), son Mark (Vietz), daughter Becky (Vietz), daughter Robin (Vietz), nine grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Burial will be in Solvang, CA with her husband Hugo.
