Norman Rupe, age 83, of Austin, passed away Saturday, December 1, 2012. He was the son of the late Leonard and Hazel Rupe, born March 26, 1929 in Oakfield, New York.

Norman was a loving husband, father and grandfather and came from a large family. After a long career with the University of Texas he retired on March 24, 1989. Norman was an Air Force veteran who served in the Korean War and held multiple offices with the Travis County Council and VFW Post #4443. He loved to fish and spent many hours on Lake Travis indulging in his passion. He also loved to travel and visited all 50 states and 6 foreign countries.

He was preceded in death by his late sister, Elsie Howard of Batavia, New York and his late half-sister, Lyla Miller of Newport News, Virginia.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ethel Rupe; son, Ray Rupe of Midland; daughter, Audrey Rupe of Boulder, Colorado; grandsons, Eric and Adam Rupe of Austin; brothers and sisters, Lois Geissler of Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, Leona Froelicker of Marana, Arizona, Benjamin Rupe of Grand Prairie, Alvin Rupe of Mansfield, Evelyn Muntz of Batavia, New York, and Marvin Rupe of Corfu, New York; aunts, Mary Rupe of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Velma Holiday of Kylertown, Pennsylvania; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 5, 2012 at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association by visiting or to the American Lung Association at

Quite fond recollections of an individual at home with himself, an astute conversationalist, an expert on pecans who shelled quantities enough to supply a city, easy to like immediately with a strong firm hand shake. Will remain in my memory until then.
