Robert Yacovissi, 74, of Falls Church, Virginia passed away on May 18, 2019 at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.
Bob was born on June 15, 1944 to Samuel J. and Ruth Yacovissi and grew up in Baltimore, Maryland. He was a graduate of Calvert Hall High School and Towson State College. After teaching high school science for one year, he enlisted in the Navy in 1967.
In 1970 Bob received his Commission as an Officer in the Medical Service Corps, United States Navy. His career included postings in Sardinia Italy, Bangor Washington, Norfolk Virginia, and Washington DC. In Norfolk he served on board the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz. He retired from the Navy as a Commander in 2001. Bob married Virginia Saul on August 29, 1970. They shared a lifelong interest in gardening and plants and were active in the Virginia Native Plant Society and the Maryland Native Plant Society for many years. In addition to his wife and mother, Bob is survived by his brother Dr. William Yacovissi and wife Margaret, nephew Adam Yacovissi and wife Rachel, great-nephew Jonah Yacovissi, and cousins. He was predeceased by his father and his infant twin brother.
Bob will be remembered as a kind and friendly person by all who knew him. He will be greatly missed.
Relatives and friends are invited to call at the Burgee-Henss-Seitz Funeral Home, 3631 Falls Road in Baltimore, Maryland on Saturday, June 1, 2019 from 1 pm to 3 pm, with prayer service and reception to follow.
Inurnment will take place in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
