Everett Douglas (E.D.) Clement, 93, of Bartlett, Texas, passed away Saturday, February 25, 2012 at the Will-O-Bell Nursing Home surrounded by his family. Everett was born July 14, 1918 in Pilot Point, Tex., the middle child of Arlie David and Attice Silvey Clement.
Everett graduated from Sherman High School in 1937, and then worked his way through Sam Houston State Teachers College, graduating in 1940 with a degree in Agricultural Education.
He taught at Sharp High School in Sharp, Texas for a year and then was hired at Granger High School. While teaching Ag and Vocational Education at Granger High School he met the love of his life, Irene Pope, and they were married on July 31,1943. While continuing to teach he completed his Masters Degree in Agricultural Education which he received from Texas A&M University in 1946.
He spent his life as a farmer and as an educator, teaching vocational agriculture at Granger High School for over forty years. In his many years as the advisor to the FFA, he worked with hundreds of students and traveled many miles to stock shows, as well as working with local farmers. Everett loved farming and through hard work and saving, he and Irene managed to purchase a farm at Friendship, Texas. That farm is now the site of Granger Dam, and when that land was lost, Everett acquired his current farm and ranch outside of Bartlett, Texas.
Everett actively farmed well into his 80's and ran a small herd of cows until the last few years of his life. He loved animals and raised quarter horses which were sought after as cutting horses and jumpers. His love of animals was not limited to farm animals and he obtained a game breeder's permit, raising white-tailed deer for forty years. This, added to his fondness for birds resulted in a menagerie of cows, horses, deer, chickens, ducks, guineas, geese, peacocks, cats, dogs and happy memories for family and friends. Everett was also civic minded and helped to bring the REA to the area and served on the board of directors for the Bartlett Electric Cooperative for 47 years. During his life he touched the lives of many people in the community as teacher, friend and good neighbor.
E.D. Clement was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Irene Pope Clement and his younger sister Blaize Clement. He is survived by three daughters, Beverly Clement of College Station, Texas, Marilyn Clement and husband Charles McLemore of College Station, Texas, Katherine Clement and husband Mac Puckett of Lake Jackson, Texas, three grandchildren, Kelly McLemore of Burlington, Vermont, and Lauren and Regan Puckett of Lake Jackson, Texas, his older sister Imogene Gibbons of Sherman, Texas, and three nephews, Jimmy Michael Gibbons and wife Sharron of Sherman, Texas, Don Stewart of Durham, North Carolina, and John Clement of New York, New York.
