Carl R. Lavinder

March 2, 1942July 20, 2020

Carl Ray Lavinder, 78, of Martinsville, died on Monday, July 20, 2020 at UNC Medical Center, Chapel Hill, NC. Carl was born in Bassett, VA on March 2, 1942 to the late Viola T. & Taylor F. Lavinder. He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Linda S. Lavinder as well as his daughter, Lisa L. Heyman (James) and son Carl Scott Lavinder (Peggy). Carl absolutely adored his 5 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his twin brother, Clyde D. Lavinder (Charlotte). He is survived by his brothers Larry F. Lavinder (Becky) & Revered G. Lynwood Lavinder (Roslyn). As a faithful member for 40 years of Fort Trial Baptist Church, Carl served in multiple ways, most proudly as a Deacon. He could always be counted on to serve his church family who he dearly loved. An electrician by trade, Carl retired from DuPont after 37 years of service, a career which allowed him to make countless and lifelong friends. He was very active in organizing a yearly gathering of DuPont “controlled equipment” retirees to ensure everyone could stay close. Carl’s desire to help others within the community led him to a new career in maintenance at Blue Ridge Manor for several years. After his “second” retirement, Carl took on his most important and meaningful job, ensuring the health, safety and care of his loving wife Linda. People and fellowship were extremely important to Carl, the family will always remember how he never met a stranger and possessed a true love and compassion for his fellow man. The best possible husband, father, son, neighbor and friend anyone could have, Carl will be missed by so many. We are providing multiple ways to ensure everyone stays safe in celebration of Carl’s life: The family asks that everyone please wear a mask or face covering during both the visitation and service. The family is offering the attendees the option to join the service in the sanctuary or from the comfort of their vehicle (radio) in the church parking lot. The family will receive friends, Thursday, July 23, 2020 at Collins Funeral Home, 30 Riverside, Drive, Bassett, VA from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. A service will be held Friday, July 24, 2020 at 11:00 am at Fort Trial Baptist Church, 170 Oak Level Road, Stanleytown, VA with Dr. Joey McNeill officiating. Immediately following the service, the burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park, Martinsville, VA. Online condolences may be made at www.collinsmckeestonefuneralhomebassett.com In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Fort Trial Baptist Church in his memory.

To Linda and family
My sincere condolences in your loss of Carl. He was very special. I was so happy to have known him all these years

I met Carl shortly after his dad Taylor married my mom Jewell. What a lovely person. He was so kind. Always happy and upbeat.

When my mother had her stroke it was Carl that contacted me. He was so helpful while my mom was in the nursing home. Visiting her regularly and was supportive.

When my mom passed away Carl helped me with her estate. Not being a Virginia resident I couldn’t be the executive of her estate. Carl came on as co-executive to save me the cost of a lawyer. I was so grateful for him doing that. He didn’t have to.

I was so shocked to hear of his passing. I was looking forward To seeing Carl on my next visit to Martinsville. Which was planned in the spring until the Coronavirus.

I found out late that Carl had passed away. I would have attended the funeral but the US/Canadian border closure was extended until the end of August. So I couldn’t come.

I will miss Carl a lot. We emailed each other regularly to stay in touch.

My prayers are with you Linda and your family as you deal with this sudden passing of Carl.

To the Lavinder family:

I worked with Carl at Dupont and would like you to know I am
so sorry for your loss. I saw him and Linda last at Bojangles one morning some time ago and as always he was so pleasant.

I met him through a computer training program at work that most didn't want to learn, but he was always kind and so very nice to me. Please know I will be praying for all of you.

We knew Carl at BHS as we were a year behind.
Throughly enjoyed many conversations with him while my Mother was at Blue Ridge Manor recalling memories of friends and times of our youth.
Living out of state he offered great comfort I could call on to check on my Mother when needed.
He will not be forgotten.

I have been Carl's nest door neighbor for for 48 years. He was a honorary pall bearer for my father's funeral. I listened to the song by Vince GILL titled GO REST HIGH ON THAT MOUNTAIN. The sadness enveloped me and cried for hours. I regret hat I was not able to attend your service in person . I will miss you my friend.
Heaven has new angel.
