“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7 best describes Charles “Buddy” Jones, Jr. 84, of Beckley who went to his Heavenly Home on the evening of March 18, 2019 at the Beckley VA Medical Center in the presence of his loving children.
Charlie was born on October 7, 1934 in Pear, West Virginia to Charles, Sr. and Letha Jones Townsley. Charlie was of the Baptist faith and he would regularly recite the Lord’s Prayer giving thanks to “Mr. God.” Charlie attended school in Raleigh County prior to his enlistment into the military and proudly served as Corporal in the United States Army from 1953 until 1956. During this time he served overseas in Germany.
Upon his return to Beckley from serving his country, Charlie went to King Tut Drive-In to eat and met the love of his life, Virginia Sawyers, who served him his meal. From then on the couple dated and then married on November 30, 1956 Charlie and Jenny were married in Beckley. To their marital union were born two children, a son, Davy and a daughter, Anita and resided in Beckley.
Pappy, as he was affectionately known by family and friends, was an avid gardener always eager to share his bountiful harvest along with a joke or a tune on his harmonica. Charlie also enjoyed hunting and fishing and was always after “the big one.” Charlie worked as an appliance service technician for Montgomery Ward, eventually retiring after 29 years of service. During this time Charlie travelled to many counties and could repair anything and actually wore out several service vans.
After he retired, Charlie’s morning routine included stopping by Mountaineer Motors and having a fresh cup of coffee with his friends, the staff. When Charlie would meet people he would hand them a pen from Mountaineer Motors or a pack of chewing gum. He enjoyed giving to people.
In addition to his parents, Charlie was preceded in death by his loving wife of 53 years, Virginia; one brother, Irvin Jones; and his daughter-in-law, Nancy J. Reichard Jones. Charlie is survived by his son, Charles D. Jones, III; and his daughter, Anita K. Jones, both of Beckley; and one brother, James R. Townsley, also of Beckley.
The family wishes to thank caregiver Michelle Parker and the 4B staff of the Beckley VA Medical Center for all their superior kindness and outstanding care expressed to Charlie. Serving as pallbearers will be Jay Anderson, David Baker, Denny Baker, and Donnie Smith.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 pm., Friday, March 22, 2019 in the Chapel of Blue Ridge Funeral Home with Evangelist Tim Spencer officiating. Friends may call from 12:00 pm until 2:00 pm at the funeral home. Burial will follow the service in the Garden of the Last Supper in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens with Military Honors.
