Patricia Ann Calmes

September 21, 1925January 20, 2013

Patricia Ann Calmes, 87, died peacefully on January 20, 2013 in Houston, Texas after a brief illness. Patricia was born on September 21, 1925 in Ponca City, Oklahoma to Jewel Cawyer Hammons and Fred Golden Hammons, Sr. She was big sister to Fred Golden Hammons, Jr. Patricia was married to Ray Elton Calmes for 28 happy years. She has been a faithful member of West University Baptist Church for 48 years.

Patricia, known as Trish to her family, spent her growing up years in Donna, Texas. As a child, she made the decision to follow Jesus and was baptized at the First Baptist Church of Donna. She graduated from Donna High School in 1942 and attended the University of Texas where she began her studies in Dietetics. She graduated from Texas Women’s University in 1947 and began work as a licensed, registered dietitian at Parkland Hospital and Baylor Hospitals in Dallas and Hermann Hospital in Houston. In 1960, Patricia earned a Masters of Science in Nutrition at the University of Houston. In the early 60s, she served as the Research Dietitian at the Clinical Research Center at Methodist Hospital after completing training at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. In 1986, Patricia retired from the V.A. Medical Center as the Director of the Dietetic Internship Program. During her tenure at the V.A. she helped to implement the Coordinated Dietetic & Masters Degree Program and also served as an adjunct faculty member at Texas Women’s University Houston. Patricia served in numerous volunteer positions with the Texas Dietetic Association and the American Dietetic Association. Upon her retirement from the V.A., it was determined that more than 200 dietitians serving across the United States were graduates of programs under her stewardship.

In 1960, Patricia married Ray Elton Calmes, a widower with two children, Sharon and Michael. Her greatest fulfillment and joy was being a mother to those two children. Know also as Nonnie, Patricia greatly relished her role as grandmother to Trisha, great grandmother to Soren, Addy, and Liam and friend to all who crossed her path. She is survived by her daughter, Sharon Elizabeth Benka; son, Michael Ray Calmes and wife Teresa; granddaughter and namesake Trisha Kennedy and husband Daniel; great-grandchildren Soren, Addison, and Liam Kennedy. Also survivors include nephew David Hammons and wife Kelley; great nieces Kaitlin and Shea; niece and namesake Trisha Kelly and husband Alan; great nephew John; former daughter in law, Janine Calmes and numerous other loving relatives.

Sharon & Michael - Please accept my sincere sympathy. Your Mother was a wonderful colleague for many of us in the VA. And, she was an outstanding mentor to young dietitians and dietetic interns.

Sharon & Mike,
Shirley and I were greatly saddened to read of your mother's death in today's Chronicle. She had been someone who had been part of my life since I was a little boy growing up in the Valley. When I came to Houston after college, she and your dad did a great deal to see that I had help acclimating to life in the big city. It really helped.

Patricia, obviously, loved life and those who were passing down the road with her. She spread Christ's love to others one person at a time. She truly cared about others...and it showed. What a lovely Lady!

We mourn her passing and will pray for your comfort.

With love,
Jerry & Shirley Weaver
