Jane was involved with Katz’s Apparel Store, located in Downtown Belleville, Illinois for many years. She taught kindergarten, music and art in the Belle Valley School System and produced the annual musicals.
She graduated from Northwestern University with a music and arts Degree.
Jane married Sidney Katz of Belleville, Illinois in 1946 who preceded her in death in July 1999.
Jane is survived by her four children, Kay Marie Klausner, Lois Katz Hess, Judy Lynn Cates and Steven Arthur Katz. She was a proud grandmother of seven grandchildren, Max Klausner, Katie Klausner, Mark Hess, Abby Hess, Dave Cates, Lauren Cates, Robby Cates and one great grandchild, Aubrey Irene Cates, who was born on Jane’s 90th Birthday!
Jane loved to learn and was always trying to find ways to enrich the lives of others. She founded the Mary Cassatt Art Scholarship at Southwestern Illinois College and attended art classes as the oldest student at the community college. In April, 2004, the Southern Illinois College Board of Trustees saluted Jane by giving her the “Lifelong Learning Award”. In Jane’s response, she said, “To me, receiving this Lifelong Learning Award, at this time in my life, is the icing on the Cake. I enjoy all parts of the learning experience. I am a student at heart.”
