Pauline (Henderson) Tyo (Polly), 93 of Tavares, Florida passed away peacefully at her home at 2:51 a.m. on November 3rd, 2020 on the eve of her 94th birthday with her loving daughters attending to her needs and surrounded by love and prayers from near and far.
Polly was born November 4th, 1926 in Massena NY as the 8th of 9 children to Theodore and Cora Dupree Henderson. Polly’s father, Theodore, disappeared when Polly was 6. Years later her mother Cora moved in with Albert Frego of Massena. Polly’s children never met Theodore; however they grew up with fond memories of Grandpa Frego.
Polly married Howard James Tyo September 1st, 1945, in Massena, New York. Together they raised seven children. Later in life Polly married Rett Howard Radway of Canton NY, becoming a stepmother to his four children. In her late 40’s, when the children were older, she secured her first job outside the home working as a file clerk. After about 6 months she found a new passion buying and selling real estate. She went on to work for herself to flip real estate and was incredibly successful.
Polly spent her adolescent school years attending a catholic school in her hometown. Later in her 50’s, she attended Pasco-Hernando Community College (PACC), in Brooksville, FL and graduated with a LPN degree from their Nursing Program.
Above everything else, Polly loved a full house of family and friends. "The more the merrier," she always made a point to say. It was quite common to see 30 to 50 people gather at her home for Thanksgiving dinner. Polly always opened her home for visitors with some staying for extended periods of time. Her warmth and caring were obvious to all who enjoyed her hospitality.
Polly loved to go fishing! She taught her children how to hook a worm and catch fish. When on the Radway farm she would fish the streams and rivers when she could. When she moved to Crystal River Florida, Howard and Polly fished the ocean often with family and friends with them on their fishing boat. Her beer battered fried fish was absolutely divine!
Polly could cook up a storm. Everything from cookies, jams and pies, to pickles, preserves, stews and full blown Thanksgiving feasts. Thankfully, many of Polly’s recipes have been passed down to family and friends but it is doubted they will ever have that special touch she had when making them. Polly said she used one special ingredient in everything she made, and it was what made her food taste so good. Her special ingredient was love.
Polly loved her vegetable gardens and berry patches. The gardens and farm in Canton NY were very productive. Between the beef, pork and milk Rett produced on the farm and the food from Polly’s gardens, dinnertime on the farm, especially in the fall, was a feast every evening.
Polly had always loved to go to garage sales and auctions looking for treasures, but not as much as she loved playing cards with family and friends. Many evenings were spent gathered around the table with sounds of laughter and lively banter as the cards fell on the table.
Polly was well traveled throughout her life. In the summertime she and Howard would travel in their motorhomewith her youngest daughter to the northern states for a few months before returning to Florida. Later in life, she traveled with Howard and her in-laws (Ed and Eileen Fox) to horseshoe tournaments, where she made quite a name for herself as the “Senior Woman’s World Champion” in doubles with her partner Eileen Fox.
Polly also passed her love of traveling and exploring to her children. She hiked in Costa Rica, went dogsledding in Alaska, and rode a helicopter over an erupting volcano. When closer to home she sailed the Bahamas, parasailed and had many more adventures. Polly was a very positive, active person who could do just about anything she set her mind to do, and do it well. Her enthusiasm for the things she enjoyed was contagious.
Polly was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend but most importantly a believer in Christ. Polly was gracious, loving, and kind to all those around
her. She lived her life with the motto “Do unto others as you would have others do unto you”. Every time we got knocked down, fell down, or messed up she was always there to patch us up, pick us up or just let us know that she loved us. She was a wonderful example of God’s love.
