Kermitt Ephraim Southern, age 84, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on Saturday, January 12, 2019, in Palliative Care at UAB. Kermitt is survived by his wife of 62 years Patsy Hollingshead Southern; his son, Curtis Kenton Southern (Martha) and his two daughters, Holly Southern Kitterman (Brett) and Shelly Southern Dorai-Raj; his five grandchildren, Kristen Kitterman Wood (Benjamin), Meg Southern, Curtis Kenton Southern Jr., Paisley Dorai-Raj, and Sam Dorai-Raj. Kermitt was born, raised, and finished high school in Haleyville, Alabama. He attended Florence State Teachers College, known today as University of North Alabama, later transferring to, and graduating from, the University of Alabama, where he met his wife Patsy. Upon graduation he was commissioned in the US Army. He served his country in Korea and Vietnam. Serving 2 tours in Vietnam as a pilot. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel after 25 years of military service. After his military retirement he was employed as a Branch Manager at Navy Federal Credit Union. Upon retirement from Navy Federal Credit Union, Kermitt and Patsy returned to Birmingham, to be closer to family and friends. Kermitt joined the Birmingham Barbershop Choir, Voices of the South, and also sang with a quartet, Autumn Voices. Most recently, as a member of South Highland Presbyterian Church he served as an Elder. Kermitt was preceded in death by his father, Fred H. Southern; mother, Edna Ashley Southern; and brother, Joe Douglas Southern. A memorial service will be held in the Chapel at South Highland Presbyterian Church at 2:00pm on Sunday, January 20 with a reception to follow.
