Mark Edwin Ransford

July 9, 1948January 31, 2021

Mark Edwin Ransford, 72, Bloomington, passed away peacefully on January 31, after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer.

Mark was born on July 9, 1948 to Lloyd Allen Ransford and Betty Jean (Bosley) Ransford in Clinton, Indiana. He attended Clinton High School, where he ran track and played football. After graduation, he completed a bachelor’s degree in education at Indiana State University. He holds a master’s degree in education from ISU and a Ph.D. in education leadership from Indiana University, Bloomington. Beginning with his first position as a middle-school math teacher at Glendale Middle School, he spent his career dedicated to public education. Mark served as an administrator in the Shoals Community School Corporation, Pike County School Corporation, and Union County School Corporation until his retirement. He returned to work with children at Grandview Elementary until his death. Mark was passionate about providing all students with the best possible education and mentoring his teachers and staff.

In addition to his work, Mark enjoyed fishing and canoeing lakes and rivers; he was an avid sports fan who loved a high school game as much as a professional one. Over the years, he was an active member of Shoals Christian Church, Petersburg Christian Church, and, most recently, Sherwood Oaks Christian Church. He volunteered his time with many organizations such as the Lions Club, Optimist Club, and the IU Student Foundation.

Mark is survived by his wife of 50 years, Faith; two children, Amy and Beth; granddaughter, Sophie; brother Lloyd Bradley Ransford; Brad and Rita Lawson; Gail Williams and Erin Medved; and nieces, nephews, and many dear friends. Mark was predeceased by Lloyd Allen Ransford (father), Betty Jean Ransford (mother), and Gary Allen Ransford (brother).

A celebration of life will be handled by Day & Deremiah-Frye Funeral Home later this year.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to IU Health Hospice House (2810 S. Deborah Drive, Bloomington, IN 47403), which provided compassionate care to Mark and his family in his final days or to Hoosier Hills Food Bank (2333 W Industrial Park Drive, Bloomington, IN 47404).

I was very sorry to hear that Mark passed away. As a young school administrator, I remember that Mark was very kind to me. I admired and respected his leadership paradigm and strived to be the type of Servant-Leader that Mark always was.

Oh, Faith. I am so very sorry to hear about Mark’s passing. I smile each time I think about my conversation with him about you and your two wheel cart of boxes! His grin was ear-to-ear with pride in all you do for your students. You and Mark were a perfect pair, a great inspiration, and have enriched the lives of so many.

You and your family will be the focus of my prayers. Love you.

I first met Mark when he became superintendent of the pike Co. schools. His daughter Beth was a classmate of one of my daughters and that’s how I met Mark and Faith. They were the sweetest people I had the privilege of knowing. I got to know Mark more through the school system. I drove a school bus for many years and had a lot of conservations with Mark on the subject. You could tell he definitely had a heart to better kids in anyway he could. Faith and girls I will keep you close to my heart for as you know we went through the same several years ago. Hold tight to each other! You will always have a special place in my ❤️

Sad to hear of the loss of Mark. Through grade school, high school and college Mark was a good friend, great teammate who worked hard and cared for others. Truly regret not being able to keep contact. My prayers and blessings to him and his family.

So sorry to hear of Marks passing. I had the pleasure of knowing Mark through First Christian Church of Petersburg. He was a good friend and held an important role in my faith walk.
He held an administration position in the school system when my children were in school. I always felt he had the children's best interest foremost in his words and actions.
My sympathy's to Marks family and he will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
In Christian love,
Angie and Ray Majino
