He was an infantryman in the 1st Calvary Division stationed in Germany and attained the rank of Sergeant (E-5). He later retired after 15 years of service with the NC Department of Corrections. Fred was an artist who enjoyed painting ocean scenery, playing guitar and ballroom dancing. Fred found solace in nature, and each day included an outing with his faithful dog, Willie, to get a treat at the convenience store and then to the back yard to entertain the dogs with his politics. Fred was a kind soul who never met a stranger, and his compassion touched many lives. All will remember his quick-witted humor and jokes. He valued the times he shared with his many friends on mountain trips or camping in the woods. Fred loved his friends and family dearly, and he will be missed beyond words. Saying goodbye is hard to do. A private Celebration of Fred’s Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Lower Cape Fear LifeCare, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401, or to a pet rescue in your community.
