He was born on April 11, 1939 in Brunswick County and was the son of the late Walter Robert and Thelma Marie Singletary Sellers. Gene graduated from Shallotte High School in 1957 and joined the Coast Guard Reserves. He was self-employed as a building contractor for over forty years. He served in many community organizations including West Brunswick High School Booster Club, past President of Brunswick County Fire & Rescue Association, active member of Supply Volunteer Fire Department, Shallotte Masonic Lodge No. 727, Scottish Rite-Wilmington, and Sudan Shriners. Gene enjoyed camping and RVing, woodworking, and spending time with his family. He was an active member of Soldier Bay Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years Mary Emily Kirby Sellers; son, Walt Sellers (MaryAnn) of Ocean Isle Beach; brother, Melvin “M.L.” Sellers of Lakeland, Florida; and beloved grandson, Sam Sellers.
Funeral services will be held Friday, July 1, 2022 at eleven o’clock in the morning at White Funeral and Cremation Service Chapel, 603 Ocean Hwy E, Bolivia with Pastor Jason L. Benton officiating. Burial will follow in Galloway Cemetery, West with Masonic Rites. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Malcolm Long, Lloyd Fields, Geoff Kirby, Al Parker, Daniel Russ and Scott Brown. Honorary pallbearers will be James Russ, Mack Long and Adam Lockner.
