

Deeply loved wife, mother, aunt and teacher Harriet Segurson passed away peacefully at home in the presence of her family and caregivers. She is finally at rest after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. She was 86.
Harriet was born in Brooklyn, New York to deaf parents Ben and Kate Shafranek. She attended PS 238, Lincoln HS, and Brooklyn College before flying west to attend San Francisco State University where she received a BA and a Special Education teaching credential. She went on to touch the lives of so many deaf and hearing impaired students as a teacher of the deaf. She taught in schools for the deaf in Rochester NY, White Plains NY (her fathers Alma Mater), Berkeley CA, and Los Angeles CA. After retiring from LA Unified she worked as an interpreter for deaf patients at Kaiser Hospital in Woodland Hills.
Harriet was also active in the drama department while attending S.F. State. In 1962 she was singing in an all campus review when she met the show’s musical arranger Howie Segurson. They soon became best friends and eventually became the loves of their lives. Howie and Harriet were married June 17, 1967. They were married for 58 years.
Harriet was most proud of their daughter, Sharon and their son, Mark.
She loved jazz, old movies, theater, the Dodgers, world travel on cruises, Las Vegas getaways, all things artful and beautiful, but most of all she adored her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Irwin and Robert Shafranek and sister in law Ellen Shafranek.
She is survived by her husband Howard Segurson, daughter Sharon Segurson, son Mark Segurson (AKA Cosmo), sister in law Barbara Shafranek, as well as many nephews and nieces.
A visitation for Harriet will be held Monday, August 4, 2025 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM in The Orchid Pavilion at Glen Abbey Memorial Park, 3838 Bonita Road, Bonita, CA 91902, followed by a graveside service from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM. The family asks that you join them with a reception celebrating Harriet's Life after graveside at the Segurson family home 1440 Blairwood Ave, Chula Vista, CA 91913
