Susie was born in Yuma Arizona on August 14, 1929, to Frank and Virginia Culp. The union didn't last, and Susie and her sister Frankie were sent to a trusted and loved woman named Gertrude Laura Mayfield aka Mama Laura. She and her sister were surrounded by love, culture, and diversity which they carried into their adult life. Susie received her education and graduated from San Diego High School. She eventually married, and from that union came seven children.
She worked at Convair Aerospace for a short time, and with the City of San Diego from 1972-1995 and was partly responsible for many programs and upgrades that occurred in her community. She was involved with implementing the (REGY) program that enabled youths to obtain jobs while on summer break. She worked the voting polls for many years and remained involved with the city of San Diego activities long after she retired in 1995. Susie is solely responsible for coining the famous tagline, San Diego (America's Finest City).
Affectionately called Mah and Mother by her children, Susie was an excellent cook, well read and highly intelligent, knowledgeable in politics, sports, and many other subjects. Some of her hobbies were crossword puzzles and playing the 7's slot machines at the casino. She spoke what was on her mind and did not tolerate foolishness or disrespect from anyone, but she was known for being friendly and fair. Always dressed impeccably, with her hair and nails done and she loved her jewelry.
On February 27th at 7:33 am Susie Mae Davenport’s Heavenly Mansion was completed, and God called her home!
