Bernard "Bernie" Gutmaker passed away early in the morning on July 4, 2014. Bernie lived a full life and was loved by many. Bernie was born in Brooklyn in 1921 and lived there until he was drafted into the army. He married his wife Ruth in 1948. They moved to Smithtown, NY, where they raised their family. Bernie personified the word mensch. He was a kind and generous man, with an enormous heart. He was a pacifist - beliefs shaped by his years as a medic during the war. He spent a lifetime giving to others and sharing with everyone he came into contact with. His family meant the world to him - and the world feels emptier and dimmer without him. He loved well and was well-loved.
He is predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Ruth, and two sons, Martin and Paul. He is survived by his children and their partners, Susan & Diann, Ellen & Tiffany, Ken & Elena, his grandchildren, Amber, Daniel, Josh, their families, and many other family and friends.
