Howard Charles Klemme
March 18, 1930 – February 19, 2021
Howard Charles Klemme, age 90, passed away on February 19, 2021 in his hometown, Boulder, Colorado. A service will be planned for later date when members of the family living abroad are able to attend. He was preceded in death by his parents Claude and Freda Klemme, brother Claude Klemme, Jr. and sisters Eleise Bloom (John) and Elizabeth Klemme. He is survived by his wife, Barbara, whom he married in 1952, and his five children, Cindy Bottema (Murk), Amie Klemme (Tim Clark), Valerie Klemme (Lynn Boyle), Paul Klemme (Lisa) and Andrea Klemme along with three granddaughters Morgan Clark, Meredith Krautler-Klemme and Gwendolyn Clark. He is also survived by his sister, Carol Klemme, nieces, nephews, their children and cousins who he always enjoyed seeing and talking to. He loved us all dearly, for which we feel so very blessed.
Howard attended Boulder High School as well as CU-Boulder, where he earned both a B.A. of Economics and a B.A. of Law. He went on to obtain his Masters of Law from Yale University in 1960. After obtaining his masters’ degree, he and Barbara returned to Boulder, where he then taught at the CU Law School for 27 years and was Professor Emeritus since 1988. Howard was also the Reporter for the Colorado Supreme Court Committee on Civil Jury Instructions from 1965-1991 and continued to act as a consultant for the Committee until 2007.
He truly loved Boulder and contributed to the community by serving on Boulder City Council from 1964-1970, Deputy Mayor 1966-1968, and served on the Boulder County Planning and Long-Range Planning Commissions for 22 years. Howard’s grandfather arrived in Boulder in 1902, and both his grandfather and father worked for the university. Howard loved to give tours of Boulder, the university and the surrounding area, sharing Boulder’s history and beauty with others.
Howard also loved to take road trips and camp with his wife and children. They spent summers traveling all over North America. One of the most memorable road trips was to Mexico City and the western coast of Mexico in 1971. Later, he and Barbara enjoyed visiting Egypt, Japan, China, and cruises through the Panama Canal and a South American cruise to see Machu Picchu and the Galapagos Islands. They did multiple trips to Europe, visiting many places including the U.K., Scandinavia, Greece and Portugal. They frequently visited their daughter and son-in-law in Australia and friends in New Zealand. He was an avid photographer on all his travels as well as at many family gatherings.
Howard loved classical music and was a long-time season ticket holder to the Denver Symphony, the Central City Opera and the Boulder Philharmonic, while amassing his own large collection of classical music CDs. He also enjoyed making fudge and cardamom bread at Christmas time and canning dill pickles in the fall.
