On March 26, 2020, Larry Dale Kinion, loving husband, father, and grandpa, passed away peacefully at the age of 80 at the Longmont United Hospital Hospice Unit. Larry was born and raised in Smith Center, Kansas and migrated to Boulder in January 1961 to become a Boulder Police Officer. He left the BPD to serve our country as a soldier with the U.S. Army spending his time guarding the Berlin Wall. After his Army service he returned to the BPD to serve the citizens of Boulder. In January 1986, Larry retired from the police force with 25 years service to the city of Boulder and country. It was in Boulder that he met the love of his life, Betty, and they married in July 1967 and celebrated 52 years of marriage prior to his passing. This marriage made Larry an instant father of two children Rob and Michelle, who he legally adopted and raised as his own.
Larry loved the outdoors by hunting, fishing, camping, and hiking. He even climbed five of the “14er’s” in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. He could be found taking annual family vacations-usually driving across the USA to attend the National Jaycee (U.S. Junior Chamber) Conventions-taking in the sights along the way. Larry loved the time he served as a Jaycee and also as a member of Kiwanis and the life-long friendships he made through these organizations. He and his wife also cherished vacationing in Maui, Hawaii. Larry loved conversing with others, had a great sense of humor, and wasn’t afraid to tell it like it is!
The family has taken comfort in knowing that Larry lived his life to the fullest and that he is no longer in pain. He died peacefully with an amazing view of Longs Peak outside his hospice room window. It was his request to have no service, which the COVID-19 restrictions have made possible without any regrets and he will be cremated and laid to rest at a later date in a family cemetery in Kansas.
Larry is survived by his wife, Betty, his children Michelle and Rob and their spouses, his grandchildren, Preston and spouse, Sophia and spouse, and Tanner, his sister “Dodie“ Burdick and spouse , and many nephews and nieces.
Larry had such amazing care through the Tru Community Care non-profit organization that’s in lieu of flowers the family has requested memorials/donations be made in his name either online: TruCare.org or Tru Community Care, 2594 Trailridge Drive East, Lafayette, CO 80026, attn: Donation in memory of Larry Kinion.
