Born in Corpus Christi, TX. He was a son of the late Helena (Sala) and Augustine Vila.
Richard whole heartedly loved his mother and was a devoted son and supported his mother throughout life, offering unwavering assistance and providing emotional comfort during challenges.
He was employed by Armstrong in Philadelphia as a printer and graphic artist for over 20 years. Later he became the owner and operator of his own printing business for many years.
Richard was Catholic of faith.
He served in the US Army in the military Police and as a Medic. Stationed in various areas including Panama.
Richard was an avid motorcycle rider and fisherman. He also enjoyed flying with his brother Robert who was a pilot for the Civil Air Patrol.
This devoted father was the epitome of an active and engaged parent. He wholeheartedly embraced every opportunity to connect with his children. Whether
teaching them to ride a bike, or sharing stories during bedtime, his presence was a constant source of encouragement and joy. His active involvement goes beyond mere participation; it's a genuine commitment to creating lasting memories and nurturing a strong bond with his kids. Our Dad embodied the spirit of playfulness, curiosity, and unconditional love, making each moment with his children a cherished experience. He is remembered as a wonderful Dad. Dad created memories of him teaching them how to make pancakes, taking walks in Tocany creek park in Philadelphia, going to wildwood beaches, teaching his daughter how to drive. When his first Grandson was born he was the first one at the hospital. He even made time to take her to some of her obstetrician visits before the birth. His children are blessed to have Richard as their father.
He was the best Dad ever.
Growing up with his siblings they would go crabbing & fishing in the back bays of the Jersey Shores. Richard also taught his sister Estelle how to fish and drive a car. He provided Estelle with his beautiful Pontiac Convertible to learn with also he trusted her to borrow this treasured car on several occasions.
He spent time educating his self about chemical compounds and successfully invented a waterless cleaner for the printing press. He was able to patent this compound and provide a convenient way to clean a printing press this led to increased efficiency in his field
Richard also worked on several commercial art projects with the Philadelphia art museum. He was a gifted graphic designer. He also assisted with modernizing the design of the Campbell soup labels.
He is survived by his children, Kathleen M. wife of Ricky L. Henry of Pottstown, Richard A. husband of Carrie Vila of Gilbertsville and David J.. Vila of Texas. Grandchildren, Gregory V. Distajo of Pottstown, Melissa and Christine Vila of Philadelphia. A sister Estelle wife of Edward Marshall, Jr. of Philadelphia. A nephew Edward Marshall III of Philadelphia. Nieces Jeannine Marshall and Michelle wife of Liam Hutchinson both of Philadelphia.
He is predeceased by his ex-wife Marie P. Vila who is the mother of his children, her best friend and source of encouragement. Marie stated on several occasions that he made her life better. He encouraged her to grow as a person and provided her with a beautiful home and gave her independence with teaching her to drive. A brother Robert husband of Kelly Lagera. Sisters Manuela wife of Robert Ambach and Patricia wife of Gerald Maksymchock.
Funeral Services will be held at the Linwood W. Ott Funeral Home, Inc. 111 North Reading Ave. Boyertown, PA 19512. on Wednesday February 21, 2024 at 11:00 AM.
Family and friends may call Wednesday at the funeral home from 10:00 to 11:00 AM.
Interment will be in Limerick Garden of Memories, Limerick PA.
