Janice Patricia Lewis Hendershot was born July 13, 1933 in south Alabama and moved soon afterwards to the small town of Esto in north Florida. She graduated from high school in Bonify Florida in 1950 and Nursing school at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, GA in 1960. She met her husband, Fred Hendershot, who was a student at Georgia Tech. They were married in Atlanta on October 29, 1960. Following Fred's graduation they moved to Huntington, WV. Their daughter, Karissa, was born on January 8, 1962.
In 1966 Fred was transferred to the Brussels Belgium office and in addition to travels to Europe, Jan was able to visit the Holy Land and Russia on tours with the American Women's Club of Brussels. In 1969 they were transferred back to Huntington. In July 1972 they moved to Northern New Jersey where she became active in the American Gloxinia and Gesneriad Society and becoming a Nationally accredited plant and flower judge for the society. In 1976 they were transferred to the San Francisco area and she continued her AGGS flower judging activities. In 1979 they moved to Wilmington, Delaware and she decided to go back to school and studied electrolysis for women. She started her own business sharing an office with a local doctor and was very successful until retirement. On retiring they moved to the Tampa, Florida area and she found a new hobby, jewelry making and polished stones. They activity was through the Tampa Bay Mineral and Science Club where she not only taught jewelry making but became club President for two years. She continued teaching her jewelry classes until the current illness.
