Nellie Slater, born Scharf, 99, of Brookline, MA passed away peacefully on October 12, 2018. She was born in Vienna, Austria and studied needlework before escaping to the US as an orphan at the age of 19 after the start of World War II. She supported herself as a dressmaker before and after her marriage to Leon Slater and acquired the resources for her family's visit to Vienna, Venice, Paris, and London in the summer of 1958. In Brookline she and her husband hosted parties for a large circle of German-speaking friends. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 50+ years Leon Slater and two brothers Paul and David. She is survived by her daughter Claire Slater and her husband Stephen Brudno of Brookline, MA and her son Steven Slater and his partner Jerry Bernhard of Cambridge, MA. Funeral arrangements were private and for the immediate family.
