David John Smith Sr.

David John Smith, Sr., 68, of Astor, Florida died Monday the 21st of October 2013 at his residence. A Graveside Service will be held at Christ Church Cemetery on Saturday, the 26th day of October, 2013, at 10:00 A.M., with Rev. Sammy Chancey officiating. Mr. Smith was born the 26th of April 1945 in Norfolk, VA, to the late Luther Smith and Ruth Houck Smith. He had been a resident of Saint Simons Island for twenty years and graduated from Glynn Academy in 1965, before moving to Midway, GA where he was stationed on Fort Stewart Army Base. David was a member of the Masons #73, 32nd degree, Shriners Alee Temple of Savannah, GA, Forty and Eighth, VFW Post 9986, American Legion past President for Post 0006, Fraternal Order of Eagles and American Veterans 9987. He served during the Vietnam War and he retired from the United States Army after twenty-seven years of service. In addition to his parents, Luther and Ruth Smith, he was also preceded in death by his wife of twenty-five years, Hazel Gwynn Smith. Survivors include his son, David J. Smith, Jr. and wife Terri of Saint Simons Island, GA; his daughter, Jamie E. Smith of Alpharetta, GA; and three grandchildren, Taylor Smith, Baleigh Smith and Abby Cate Smith, all of Saint Simons Island, GA. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, Attention Donations, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607; or call 1-800-241-Gift.
