ALBERTO CATAMO began his life journey in San Pancrazio, Italy—the seventh child of ten, born to Francesco and Maria Antonietta Catamo on March 23, 1933. He followed his sister to Canada in 1962, first to Kitimat, BC, later to Vancouver, BC where he remained for the rest of his life.
He was the Assistant Italian Trade Commissioner at the Italian Consulate in Vancouver and was responsible for promoting Italian food and wine all over British Columbia and into Alberta for many years before he started his own business. He opened a very popular repair shop at 1st Avenue & Nanaimo Street, which he ran six days a week until he retired at 82 years old, after quintuple-bypass surgery. In retirement Alberto spent his time gardening, on his mathematics hobby, sourcing materials for various home projects such as the bocce court, and pursuing his lifelong passion as a food & wine aficionado. Alberto also loved opera and memorized the libretti of most of the Italian operas.
Alberto and his partner, the late Helen Carano, had one son, Franco; and with his partner, Margo, a daughter, Aurora, and a son, Alex. Son Franco and his partner Donita had five children: Giovanni (Chanel), Antonio (Kimberly), Nicolo, Ariana (Ciaran) and Anissa (Michael); and great-grandchildren Laila, Blake, Scarlett, Peach, Declan, Matteo, Anya, Silas, Ilaria, and Rorik, all in the Lower Mainland. Alberto also leaves behind his sister, Verbena, in Ottawa, his brother Bruno (Lucia; their son Francesco), and many nephews and nieces in Italy; his nieces Genni Gunn (Frank Hook) in Vancouver and Ileana Springer (Peter) in Thailand and their son, Alberto’s great-nephew Lloyd, in Vancouver; as well as his nephew Leo Donati (Carol Howard) in Ottawa; and their children his great-nieces Cyan (Alex) and their son Charlie in California; and Coco (Austin) in Ottawa.
Alberto was predeceased by his mother Maria Antonietta Catamo, his father Francesco Catamo, his brothers Mario I, Mario II, Guiseppe, Ugo, and his sisters Clara, Ida, and Bianca all of whom were in Italy.
On December 2, 2023, after almost a decade of serious medical conditions and numerous hospital admissions, Alberto succumbed to heart failure and passed away peacefully in his sleep. R.I.P.
