On Thursday, August 16, 2018, Donald Edward Hartnett, Husband, Father and Granddad, passed away in his sleep at the age of 86 years. He is survived by his Wife Frances, Son Donald (Jr), Daughter Yvonne, Granddaughter Jackie, Granddaughter Claire, Grandson Dennis, Granddaughter Emily, Grandson Julian, Granddaughter Sabrina, Sister Doreen, Sister Sylvia, Brother Arthur, five beautiful Great Grandchildren and many wonderful Nieces and Nephews.
Don was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia to Donald and Hazel Hartnett. He worked as a plumber, even doing small jobs for family and friends well after retirement. In the 1950’s Don left Halifax to find work building the Alcan aluminum smelting plant in Kitimat, BC. He was just one of 6,000 workers who built the plant and the Kenney Dam which reversed the Nechako River to produce electricity for smelting operations. Even though life was difficult in burgeoning Kitimat Frances was determined to follow him with Don (Jr) and Cathy (deceased). They spent five years in Kitimat and then moved to Burnaby, BC in the late 1950’s for a better life (and better climate).
Don was a golfer, a curler and always enjoyed fly fishing but his real passion was his wife Frances who was always by his side. I’m sure you all remember them walking along holding hands until his last days. There was no better Husband or Father and he was so very loved.
