After a long illness, Val peacefully slipped form this world on November 27, 2019. Her parents, Paul and Anna Schultz, and her siblings, Natalia Drozdowski, Edmund Schultz, and Lorna Fedorowski preceded her.
Val was a woman ahead of her time. She was a feisty, hard working, and independent businesswoman who owned and managed her apartment buildings well into her 80s.
Her father emigrated from Poland in 1926 and brought over his family in the years following. Val arrived in Canada with her mother on May 31, 1929.
Val grew up in Surrey, BC on the family farm. Even as a young child, Val was a hard worker. She was an integral part in clearing the land for and then working on the farm. It was her quick work picking strawberries to sell that paid the property taxes each year. Val graduated from Surrey High School and worked many years as a book keeper for Nabob – a favourite story that she liked to tell was being called into the manager’s office thinking she was about to be fired because she was 2 cents out in balancing accounts, only to be praised and given a raise.
Val loved to travel – biking through BC in her younger years graduating to international travel in her senior years. Val travelled extensively across Canada and the US; to Scotland and the UK and through Europe, including Italy and Germany.
Val was a kind and loving person. She provided friendship and support to her cousin and niece Nela McCart (nee Schultz) after the death of Nela’s twin brother Edward, and was maid of honour at Nela’s wedding. Val was a hard working and loyal daughter, cousin, and aunt welcoming many generations of her extended family into her home. She will be sadly missed by Heather (Stewart) Sawin and Nicole, Jessica and Ray.
Special thanks to Maynard Smith for his unending support, care, and friendship. He was always there when she called. Maynard was a regular visitor to her in her home, when she was in hospital, and finally when she had to move to a care facility. He would often break her out for a walk around the block or a ride in his convertible when she was no longer able to live independently.
In addition, we would like to express our deep appreciation to the staff at Haro Park who did their very best to keep Val comfortable up to the end.
