In 1940, she married Mr. Cao Ping (曹平) in Hong Kong. Soon after, they returned to Taishan Danfen (端芬) to look after Mr. Cao’s family business. She gave birth to four children - two sons and two daughters. Her children would grow up and have families of their own, providing her with 7 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, 1 great-granddaughter-in-law, and 2 great-grandson-in-law.
Mrs. Cao was gentle, considerate, and kind-hearted. She respected her elders and loved children. In everything she did, she did it selflessly and wholeheartedly, focused on maintaining a harmonious environments for the greater good of family and community. She treated everyone with kindness and respect.
Mrs. Cao was also a strong and unflappable person. When her family encountered hardship or difficulties, she would face these challenges calmly without fear. Her strength and perseverance allowed her to endure and overcome adversity. For example, during periods of civil unrest and famine in China, Mrs. Cao and her husband would take long distances, over 10 km, through rough terrain and across rivers from Duanfen (端芬) to Guanghai (廣海) each day to sell home-made Chinese herbal wine. She did this for many years, without a single word of complaints, so that she and her husband could provide for their family.
In 1988, at the age of 65, Mrs. Cao and her husband immigrated to Vancouver, Canada. Despite her age, she was able to acquire a basic understanding of English, allowing her to communicate with simple phrases. This was important as she helped her daughter to run and manage a rooming house near Chinatown. She ran this business flawlessly.
Mrs. Cao was very generous and hardworking. Even in her 80’s, she would still take care of housework and look after her great-grandchildren. She lived by example and taught the younger generations in her family the importance of maintaining a harmonious family environments through selflessness and compromise. She believed that harmony is most precious and that it lays the foundation for good fortune.
Mrs. Cao passed away peacefully on November 14, 2015, at 10:50 AM in Vancouver at St. Vincent’s Hospital. She was 92 years old.
